Then again, I agree that the current state of it is not good.
Although the damage of it is okay, at least if you use it with the jungle armor perk which gives melee attacks additional 50% damage.
So, I could use it in full melee against bugs on diff6, yesterday.
The problem was NOT that it did not kill them effectively enough, but that it attack range was way to short.
Against the mini bugs, it did work, but as soon as you were trying to attack medium bugs, like e.g. the armored bugs with heavy front armor, they were easily able to hit you twice while you were still out of the reach of your bayonett...
Which sucked a lot, of course, because you had to abort your attack spree to heal yourself, which opened yourself to get swarmed by those enemies, not getting piled to death bcs of it.
So, a proper solution would be, imho, do not change anything about it's damage and penetration, but increase it's attack range by at least 50%.

The weapon demanding both of these to be used makes me feel like heavy armour needs iframes and light armour needs attack speed / critical strike chance when using melee. To make it actually feel like an action game with melee combat.
Game isn't balanced around melee combat at all.
You're expected to trade toe to toe with a stalker with this gun and it has 10X your health, armour and damage, ragdolls you with its tongue attack.
It's 1000x easier to just shoot an explosive at it from range lmao.
If they want melee to work. Either needs to stagger those enemies. Or it needs to be able to kill them faster than they can kill us. OR let us have iframes somehow.
You CAN headshot stalkers for a one hit kill but its tremendously difficult to do in melee. If it's not STUNNED.
No iframes and being staggered and stunned on every attack makes it really feel bad. Other action games with melee combat have iframes in some capacity and this game doesn't so it just feels god awful.
Really shines a light on the fact that the spike damage in this game came from the fact there's no iframes and that enemies always attack in chains. And sometimes they home onto you and finish the chain even if you're outrunning them. Which you can't do in heavy armour, anyway, so you just end up taking full chains of damage and spamming stims.
But you can't take the stim armour or else your damage goes to complete ♥♥♥♥.
I got like 1500 melee kills last night just trying this thing out.
Soloing chargers, which you kinda need medium or light armour for because juking the attack is wonky as ♥♥♥♥ with heavy armour, especially in a shield pack.
Takes 7 hits to charger leg to kill it, you can do that within one stun grenade.
After blowing off impaler leg armour, 4-5 stabs??? And it goes down.
If everyone on the team is using bayonets and on the same page, you could get some work done.
But the fact that you need to throw every stun nade in the game at everything to make it work, cos you cant trade with alpha commanders, or big packs of warriors / hive guards without getting obliterated, just shows me the weapon needs more stagger.
More stagger on it and it becomes viable. Like literally, dont shoot that bile spewer, I'm gonna stab it. And doing so won't make me take half my health cos it stabs through the shield generator pack somehow lol. Viable.
I can see it actually being kinda good if we start playing this like DND, and one of y ou takes a full medic set JUST TO PUSH E ON ME, and someone with nades set picks stun grenades and JUST USES THEM TO STUN STUFF FOR ME TO STAB....
But who the f is gonna play like that, and go through that much effort just to kill things you can kill with two buttons from 100 yard away with other weapons???
They really need to look at melees place in this game compared to other weapons if they implement them properly.
This was very disappointing.
To be as strong as an explosive crossbow at killing enemies, staggering them, AOE, etc. You need a ♥♥♥♥♥ Thunderhammer from 40k.
Not a bayonet, with realistic physics, damage and a finnicky, laggy, tiny hitbox. It needs to be a military shovel that sweeps in an arc, staggers everything as much as normal melee attacks do, and does as much damage as the explosive crossbow, so you can just charge into a bunch of enemies and press the mouse button on them 3 times to kill them all - with no risk to yourself - JUST LIKE YOU CAN WITH THE XBOW!!
Ask anyone who has actually seen combat which hurts more, getting stabbed, or getting shot? It's getting stabbed, every time. It's insanely more painful and damaging than getting shot by a bullet or even an arrow. You may as well have just been hit with an explosive.
That's what I'm saying, if they're not comparing the effectiveness of melee weapons to ranged weapons, what's the point? Always going to be a niche, or even a meme pick.
Well as a gun, the constitutions are stuck at a weird place that it is worth than a pistol in all the time and if you buff it with higher dmg or penaltration, it threat the current status of railgun and that big DMR. But bring a powerful spear will make a lot of sense (no), even you are not suppose to bring a spear at all.
A buff, only apply on constitution, not only in melee range and penetration, allow you to kill a hulk at front much more easier.
FYI: you can kill a hulk at front at current state, it's actually hitting the heat sink cause you are go through the model. if you try to stab it from left front side (its right front side), you will be easier to stab it.
So we will start by correcting some assumptions and then we may be able to hold a conversation, or something that ressemble it at minimum :
The Revolver (Senator) has AP4, not AP5.
The Bayonet melee attack doesn't cause helldiver ragdoll unlike the regular one, and unless it is aimed at the head of a light armor, or hurt helldiver, it shouldn't kill in one shot since it does 110 damages without peak physiques, and helldivers has 125 health. Aim for the leg, or pulls out your pistol butt next time !
The only reason to use the constitution is to meme around, challenge yourself, and, onetap most chaff even without Peak Physique. It's by no mean meant to be your main weapon, in nowadays war, nobody willingly use a 120year old gun platform, let alone 200yo+ gun design.
You can already stab a charger in the leg and kills it.
What i'd like to see instead, is the ability to install a Bayonet on whatever gun I want, and double on my SMGs.
edit : oops I thought you were talking about it's melee damages since you called it a spear, anyway I realised afterward since it was the stats of the projectile damages you gave, whatever I edited out that part, sorry :)
Players should just press the melee button to kill all enemies, close all bug holes/destroy all fabs, collect all the samples, and successfully extract.
Come on devs, get on it!
But as for the general melee, I don't think a balanced of melee is required, a melee should be always treat like a last option in battlefield. A bayonet should be a bit of better, but 1 to 5 doesn't beat a 200 in all cases. That is not suppose to be a deal of HD2, even in real world trench fight today (you know what I am saying) people will take SBR instead of hammer.
But the constitution can be different, because It was stuck in weird place where a pistol better than it in all the time and it you buff the damage or penetration, it will threat the current state of railgun and big dmr. Then why not just make it way more weird?
Make it a stupid meme gun, a spear that able to shoot, longer range (bayonet) penetration(bayonet) and a bit stun(again, bayonet). Then we treat the other bayonet that might be exist on other weapon only as a add-on solution.
What I expect is constitution to be a terrible gun but have a unique bayonet.
That is, a spear able to shoot something.
The bullet damage should be nerf like goes to light penetration or 100 dmg but provide a buffed anti tank bayonet. Then the only good for constitution is the bayonet of democracy.
The thing is, the constitution, as a gun, is worth than a pistol and if you buff it too much it will beat the big dmr and railgun. So why not just buff the bayonet to make it a unique feature, as that the most satisfied part of constitution,
And for rest of the weapon with bayonet, just make it like a little powerful melee attack without better penetration.
Then you will get a spear call constitution and it able to shoot someone.
It will be stupid as hell but it will be much more fun

Just for you to know, you can actually kill a hulk from the front, but it's a trick of hit box, just like in previous build you can melee kill a charger by its leg. The hit box allow the damage.
Current build remove the armor penetration of helldiver's melee attack (it was lv7 penetration) but this is actually a fun build, allow you to kill a tank with about twenty stab of front armor (Again, I only expect an anti tank penetration)
