I would gladly give back this last patch, despite some of the other buffs (mostly to things that really didn't need them, like the autocannon and recoilless rifle) we got, if it meant them not (for all practical purposes) removing one of the most fun and unique guns in the game.
suck it up, you big baby, and try something else
there are much better guns out there
i did and that doesnt change the fact they ruin that weapon and that is the problem they make punisher useless now
Plasma Punisher used to be amazing for choke point defense with a balance of killing power and staggering power. The last patch made it a shadow of its former self.
It killed striders from the front as the explosion bypassed frontal armor. It stunlocked berserkers even before the buff patch/nerf to berserkers. It knocked Devastators off target and allowed for more stuns for followup shots. It was a great primary for bot front, now really outclassed by other options, but during the dark times it was one of four or five bot primaries that didn't feel like you were gimped playing with it.
It's not the same gun anymore. It functions differently, now it works much more like the other Punisher shotguns.
My biggest issue with it, other than the awkwardness of all explosive primaries and self damage and close range, is the crossbow and eruptor even in their perceived "bad" states always did its job but just better. They have aoe medium pen blasts that could kill striders in 1-2 shots and blow up/stagger groups of any devastator or lesser enemy similarly but had the added bonus of one shotting devastators on headshot and blowing up fabs. So I never saw any additional possible bonus to the plas punisher than shooting a bit faster.
(Not trying to say you couldn't like it, just explaining part of why I never found it appealing)
i didnt see this thread and made my own explaining the appeal but i'll recap.
it had a very nice area of impact. it was extremely useful against the scout walkers to launch the pilot out of its seat on any distance.
on short distance you had to be a bit careful but on long range it went in such a beautiful arc that you could easily fire into a crowd, even when partially behind cover, and take out a group of enemies, including the shielded guys that would end up stumbling a bit.
you could also arc it over closer by enemies to hold off the further back ones while others took care of the close enemy.
can't do it with its straight shot now.
there was a unique utility to it with a variety of cases where it excelled.
not it just doesn't.
personally i don't care if this weapon is bad now.
but i really wish they would give me a gun now that continues with this legacy.
the granade launcher doesnt have this kind of drop either so it's not that.
basically i wish i could get some kind of small mortar again. either just like what this gun used to be,
or could even be a stratagem with a manually operated mortar that comes with an ammo backpack that you can team reload on to go faster.
there is just a huge satisfaction of popping off a bunch of shots arced like that into an enemy group.
regular mortars dont deliver that same kind of fun, even when you can upgrade to them prioritizing marked targets. i'd much rather aim them myself.
it's what this PP used to do for me well enough. now i don't have anything like it.
Isn't that kind of the point, though? Much like how the Punisher Slugger wasn't intended to be a sniper rifle, I don't think the Punisher Plasma was ever intended to be a mortar. I can't speak to its other stats like damage and AoE, but limiting its effective range sees like the point.
It actually makes more sense now that the arc is less pronounced, it's an energy weapon. The flat trajectory makes it easier to use.
