Just like real life! You get a few seconds of panic before it's all dark!
gameplay reason :
Now, I would understand if liquids were, say, acid, or such, but in that case even touching it should be a problem. I'm sure water on particularly cold planets could be a big deal too. But you can stay in water on all planets without trouble and the swimming is the only problem. So there is really no excuse.
Remember in The Incredibles how she said NO CAPES because people died in them well this is it

Ah yes, Helldivers 2, known explicitly for its realism
Exactly. So no swimming because they made up the game world and they said so. ezpz
Hmm let me think
Ok full body armor + 2 to 3 weapons and a backpack, and ammo for all of that.
Yeah i see no problem why we cant swim not
Do you think you could swim like that+ you just waked up from cryo sleep and you only got 1 day of training so what do you think why we cant swim
Your dude wades into deep water, floats on the surface like he's wearing floaties, and breaststrokes with flawless form so you think it's no problem. 3 sec later LMAO j/k your guy dives to the bottom. Wile E. Coyote physics.
ON TOPIC: I understand why Arrowhead don't want us to swim everywhere, but the current limitation is just asinine. We drown in under 3 seconds, which is usually just long enough to notice we're swimming and turn around, but not always long enough to go back to the shallows. The game is terrible at showing us where the shallow and deep parts of the water are, where crossings can be made, etc. The game also doesn't support any way of climbing out of the water - we can only walk out if we find a shallow bank.
Worst of all, drowning doesn't seem to be connected to... well, anything. This would make some amount of sense if it were tied to our Stamina. Swim as long as you have the strength, then drown. That would reward players for using light armour and Stamina boosters, and could allow us to save ourselves by stimming in the water.
Let's be fair here - we really should be able to swim the 15 or so meters necessary to cross a narrow body of water.
Ah, yes, the light kevlar armour from the super store is so heavy that a person instantly drowns while wearing it. Totally reasonable!
