I think the ships might be real.
Which is to say, the visible amount is correlated to the amount of players present at any one planet.
It wouldn't require precise timing to simulate, unlike planetary orbital strikes/drops.
I can confirm this. I went to the new sector after Heeth was liberated and the skies were significantly less decorated with Super Destroyers than Angel's Venture.
Correlated yes, but just to be clear, it's not a precise showing (since there are often times 20-30k people over Angel's Venture and that many ships would blot out the sky.).
if our pcs wont fry first. i love smell of napalm coming from 30000 ships...oh wait thats my cpu
You're underestimating how big a planet is.
Assuming the planets in Helldivers are roughly Earth-sized, the Earth's surface area is 200 million square miles. I'm not sure how large a Destroyer in Helldivers is supposed to be, but they look pretty small for something called a "Destroyer". Just by eyeballing it from the size of the Pelican / Helldiver Launchers, I'd guess about 200m long by 30m wide.
The largest ship on Earth is a supertanker that's 458 meters long and 70 meters wide. Let's use those dimensions just to play it safe, even though that's about the size of 5 Helldivers Destroyers put together, if my estimate is close.
You'd need approximately 80 of that supertanker to cover 1 square mile, or 16 billion of them to cover the surface of the Earth. 100k of the supertanker wouldn't even cover 0.001% of the Earth's surface, much less be enough to blot out the sky. If you want a sense of how little that would cover, make an image that's 316x316 pixels, and then color a single pixel.
That's not proof that the ships/stratagems are 1:1 with real players actively playing, but it doesn't seem implausible to me, just with a cap on render distance (otherwise you'd see ships stretching to the horizon).
