But as we take planets, we advance, theoretically. I think they also have some dynamic things they can add to make it more interesting.
A new order will be added tomorrrow, regardless of whether we win or lose on Angel's Venture today.
Basically we liberate planets, as we liberate planets more sectors open up with new planets, we will eventually liberate the homeworld of that faction which will remove them from the galactic war, if it's like the first game the galactic war will reset with some sort of reward for players after capturing both homeworlds.
The percentage goes up and down depending on some calculations they do internally, I don't think anyone knows explicitly how it works but we can theorize that it has something to do with people not completing primary objectives and losing all their reinforcements which likely lowers the percentage, there's also the passive "fighting" the factions do in which it decays at a specified rate, which is likely tweaked based on the number of players playing.
tldr we don't really know fully how it works and can only surmise based on the first game.
There will likely be defensive missions when the pushback is enough from that faction and likely new mission types in the future.
are side objectives affect impact? idk. they need to clear this confusion
Failing missions probably.
Would be cool if its in similar style to foxhole where we all collectively try to liberate via region
its like that, its shared progress in entire game. the numbers you see and other see are the same.
This is incorrect. When asked does abandoning or failing missions negatively impact the progress bar it was stated it doesn't.

"I can confirm that abandoning an operation does not progress the enemy's percentage, so people who leave operations do not negatively affect a planet. Unfortunately Evil-Bosse got it wrong, but we all make mistakes!" -AHGS_MISTY

As far as I know there has been no recent update since but correct me if I am wrong.
As for the OP, what the others have said is pretty accurate.
Without confusing or overloading you It's a tug of war match between us and the enemy where Liberation we are winning and Defense we are losing. We are in Defense if they got a W at some point, usually after taking over a planet or dropping our Liberation progress to 0%.
Key take away would be that during Liberation, the planet "HP BAR" has a DoT affect. If we do not increase progress faster than the DoT the planet switches to Defense mode.
Once in Defense mode, if we do not progress to 100% indicated by the yellow/orange bar before the RED BAR hits 100% or timer hits 0:00:00 the planet is lost to the enemy and the cycle repeats on another planet.
Note the double-bar is confusing and redundant during Defense screen. Both the timer and the red bar are the same thing.
There's also supply lines to consider but ignore those since they're not implemented or working correctly yet. The GM is doing it manually from what he has stated on Discord. There's a map link below if you want to look into it but basically it's what it looks like with the addition that certain supply lines give us bonuses but again, doesn't seem to be working...

I stated this in another post and at the risk of bringing flamers to make this another 100 post thread - keep in mind that you must do ALL 3 MISSIONS of an operation in order to get the Squad Impact reward that progresses planet completion.
Doing only 2 missions and failing 1 = no planet progress.
Doing the same 3 missions = no planet progress.
Doing 1 mission then moving to another region = no planet progress.
You MUST do all 3 missions. The only up side is progress does save so if you want to pause on mission #3 you can then start it up again later.
Pretty much
