Splitting up can be team work though, often times i see groups of 2 split off and keep it solid, 1 may go after objectives while others sweep and collect. the issue may be you have to many people that wanna lead but i find that is rare, however if you notice someone split off you can follow them that is team work.

This is what i do personally if i see someone go off on their own unless they are just insanely faster then i am, i just get their back and keep them protected.

Don't expect much of randoms. If you're joining a game be the change you want to see and follow the host.

Chat exists for a reason. Use it. Spending a few seconds to talk to your team goes a long way.

While not true on all missions, two groups of two is a good way to play. Group A go right, Group B go left, achieve sub goals along the way, meet at main goal.

A lot of people pass on placing markers even which can be useful as well, just markers and the wheels to communicate is pretty effective lol If i shoot someone i use the sorry on the wheel for example.
its enough to get the point across really some of the best random teams i have dominated with used the wheel and markers weather it was 4 man push or 2 split both were fantastic when using them.

I use markers to explicitly showcase where I am going on the map. I often split up and will use markers from place to place to show where I am going and what I am doing.

Splitting up is teamwork.

I'll give you that point, sometimes the best random teams need very little communication to work well together. I've had that happen not just in this game but in many others.
However, if we cycle back to the OP complaining about teamwork, they should try the chat options, which includes the radial chat options in game. And I have to admit I'm rather bad at using the radial chat. I'll mark, but anything more than that I use the chat.

Game is too easy to stick together as 4. So if anything staying together is a sign of low skill/poor teamwork.

Eh, the game just work out much better with 2/2 or 3/1...hell anything is better than a 4 man team, your map clearing speed is too slow like that.

A lot of people choose to ignore those though...
Just follow them :)
Splitting up is the best way to play the game. By splitting up you split the enemy spawns which makes it easier for each person and faster to do objectives or one player makes alot of noise and fights his ass off for 15 minutes while the other 3 players get every POI and objective and call in the drop and then regroup at the extract and help the guy finish out the match. Sticking together in Helldivers is the worst thing you can do because of friendly fire, how enemies spawn and turrets/stratagem use.

You mean by "they always split up" that they don't go the direction you want them to go?

Nailed it! :D THIS
Tbh, I started to enjoy the game a lot more and get angry a lot less when I stopped expecting/relying on covering fire from teammates. It sucks to have to "lower your expectations" to avoid getting pissed off, but that's the world we live in.

So many players panic orbital and it's a little irritating to be 500k or Napalmed just because someone got surrounded and figured killing everyone and everything was the play.
It really is so much easier to just go and do the other objective solo unless you see the rest of the team know what they are doing.

Without exaggeration I think more than half of all my deaths are TK's
