Impatient Pelican
when calling Pelican early, it comes as expected and waits for as long as the mission timer lasts (+20 final seconds)... but not every time!
Every mission where me (or a fellow helldiver) calls the Pelican early and has it wait enables some sort of bug where the pelican leaves the moment 1 helldivers enters, ending the mission abruptly and killing the others ones in the process...
Does it happen to you too guys? If yes, how often?

Never happened to me, but there was a thread about it a couple days ago. A few people complained about the Pelican leaving prematurely. And with a few i mean like less than 10. So i don't think it's that common.

That's intended game design.
this happens to me at least once every game session (which is 1 or 2 full operations depending on the day)

I don't mean the normal "time's up" departure of the pelican, I mean you finish the mission and you have 25 minutes remaining, so one or 2 helldivers go to call extraction and defend it while the rest clean up the secondary and extra stuff around the map.
When we do that, sometimes pelican leaves the moment the first helldiver enters

Had this happen a few hours ago. We completed the map, collected nearly all of the samples (including super rare). Called down the Pelican and it left the second the first player entered.

That player only had 6 samples... leaving the other 30+ on the planet along with us -_-'

I had that happen too, strange bug. As soon someone get in, there no take off timer. It just take off suddenly, killing anyone left behind. The first time this ever happen, we were shooting at the pelican for funnies as it arrive to land.

The pelican waits only 20 seconds from the time the first helldiver gets aboard. So if no one gets on it will continue to wait. If you used up your mission timer the Pelican will automatically come in, land and wait for I believe 40 seconds before lifting off, divers or no divers.

The other factor that limits the pelican waiting is damage taken. When the Pelican takes enough damage from enemy or friendly fire and starts smoking it will leave as soon as 1 diver gets on, even if the remaining 3 are a few steps behind.

happened to me once, on a defence mission. The other players took a long time (maybe 3-5 minutes) collecting samples while the pelican was waiting. I got in first and it took off.

I saw the Pelican hovering overhead as if the Pilot was contemplating whether to abandon us or not.

This is if you leave the area after the pelican announces it's arriving at the landing zone and before it lands. If you leave the zone too early it will start a counter to abandon the call in, but wait until it's coming in and it will circle above and use its AC on anything in a wide area. It's actually very useful thing if you can co-ordinate the team since it allows you to go off for the last POI while it clears the landing area for when you return.

Happened to me once

Great... a new bug to worry about, again test.your.patches, why do these new age devs never do any basic testing?!

It is not a bug.
If the pelican’s engines are on fire because it has taken too much damage. For example, someone decided to throw some 500kg bombs on it, it will only take the first Helldiver and fly away.
You can drop all samples and have 1 player pick them up, then ensure they are the first one on the pelican.
