Yes, you can queue solo, there is a set to play with friends only.
And as for the factions becoming repetitive, they aren't as repetitive as you'd expect. Although right now the bots have been driven out of contested space so only bugs are there to be dealt with. From the bugs side, you've got quite a few types you'd encounter, each with their own things to be aware of.
As for solo gameplay, quickplay is perfectly fine around 90% of the time, sometimes you will encounter trolls, a really poor host, or various other issues, but overall you should be fine as long as you aren't over extending or going solo too much. Respawning is limited, and a shared resource, so your death isn't just a detriment to you, but can be a detriment to everyone, so try to stay alive and try to help allies stay alive as well. Friendly fire is always on, so you can't just call down an airstrike on allies to help them either.
Solo play is not recommended for optimal enjoyment as you do not play as a hero, just a regular dispensable foot solider.
Also you've listed off competitive pvp shooters. There's no comparison.
This is co-op only and will never have a pvp mode. Friendly fire is on and there are no reductions in damage you deal to your teammates due to bad aim.
This is a live service game unfortunately, but it is "ran" by a "game master" similar to a dungeons and dragons game. The GM has a plan and players are going to be stuck following that plan.
I can answer all of that. The developers keep stating they will release a roadmap soon. Though some suspect they won't to keep changes a surprise. The game USED to have a roadmap, but that was when the developers expected this game to be smaller scale, the game exploded in popularity dethroning even Pubg, fortnight, and counterstrike for a short time post-launch. So they scrapped it to make a bigger roadmap with the tens of billions in revenue the game generated that hadn't counted on.
Currently the game actually only has ONE faction now, as we wiped out the bots yesterday. (Don't worry, they will be back once the story lets them.) But we are soon getting a third faction to fight. (High tech space squids, the Illuminate)
The developers regularly add new content, we've received several new enemies to fight since launch, dozens of new weapons, we got pilotable mech suits, soon we're getting cars/apcs/tanks/etc. And lots of other new call-in stuff.
The game is almost unplayable currently however due to a crippling bug that causes everyone to crash with a VERY high frequency on extract. But we're supposed to get a fix for that this week.
If your a casual player, you won't get bored. If your a hardcore player like me, yeah it'll get a bit stale eventually, but it's still fun even 150+ hours later.
Get amongst it, you can even earn the battle pass currency so no need to spend a single dollar on MTX as well.
