session is private you do not have permission to join?

just tried to join a friends game got this message?
there only public and friends only in the game settings how is this happening ?

The game and Steam have their own separate friends list. If they're not in the friends list in-game then you're going to get those issues of "session is private" if they have their game set to "Friends only".

Most likely your friend isnt host.

Not true.
I have never added anyone ingame and adding them on Steam is enough to be able to join their lobbies, but just because you can see their lobbies does not mean that they are also the ones hosting. If a non-friend hosts, I cant join still but I see their lobbies.

but they are on my friends list both on steam and in game(added by steam), the only thing i can think is there set to offline on steam?

The games connectivity for friends and crossplay is all bugged as hell. I have a friend who still has me as a friend in the game, but I do not have them as a friend. And when I add them, they do not get notified. We have problems connecting to each other too. It's borked.
