The MG-43 is not a LMG
The Stalwart MG-105 is the LMG of the game. As per the description from Helldivers 1, "the MG-105 is a light machinegun"

The MG-43 is a MG/GPMG/MMG. The only thing"lmg"ish about an MG-43 is that it is man portable.

Well technically it still is because you can carry it around and shoot it from the shoulder.

MMG is good description for it since it's literally inbetween the stalwart and HMG

Ok...? Not sure it matters. A military force can designate things to be whatever they want.
There can be more than one LMG in existence. Perhaps they plan on making something else that would be an MMG, or not have anything designated MMG at all. I'm perfectly fine with the 43 being an MMG though... if we can mount it to things.

Going by that logic, the current HMG in the game is also a LMG.

I kept seeing people refer to the MG-43 as a LMG.

You're right that a military can dictate whatever they want, however in universe canon has, afaik, only referred to the MG-105 as a LMG. Also in terms of doctrine and application, even the description makes reference to the fact that the MG-43 is generally a stationary gun that has been adapted for portability.

Since HMG‘s are usually mounted on something like a tri/quadpod and crew operated, the MG-105 also doesn’t really fit the description.
Since we don’t know the caliber, it might actually fire a bullet thats too small for HMG class
