But if you intend to actively farm them without getting clobbered, I recommend playing on Level 6 (Extreme) difficulty solo or with a few chums and select missions such as Sabotage Air Base (Automaton only planets), Emergency Evacuation (Not to be confused with Evacuate essential personnel), Retrieve Valuable Data or Launch ICBM. These missions specifically allow you to roam the map with enough time to complete the mission objectives afterwards.
Most, if not all, fabricators and bug nests will contain rare samples.
Happy hunting. And if you want someone to gather samples with, feel free to add me and I'll join you whenever I am playing. I've completed my ship but I wouldn't mind helping a fellow Helldiver.
Edited to reflect prior responses on Evacuate Essential Personnel missions.
That's one way you can leave with like 35 of 30.
Oh +1 this. I didn't notice it on first pass. But yeah that's the explanation.
Yep, this is your answer. The reduced number of areas means each area spawns more samples.

Its slower than Evacuate missions. And people can play higher difficulties and get more.
Evacuation of essential personell 20-30 rare samples in very short timeframe
Spend less time in the forum and just play.
