I do however run hero of the federation for the 50% chance not to die when taking lethal damage. God it makes diff 7 so much more bearable, and gives me a fighting chance diff 9. I had earlier today where I got bounced around by 4 rocket devastators. I still died, but I survived getting bounced around long enough that I feel if a teammate could've helped me, I would've gotten a stem off and lived.
Depending on the weapons I take I usually use light armor for bugs and medium/heavy for robots.
Extra: Shield Generator pack is still very very good vs bots for the above short answer
IMO light armor vs bots seems to be mostly for stealth builds or farming D1-2 PoI loot.
Should also add that i use slugger shotty and autogun so the bigger enemies stagger instead of shooting at us.
Honestly, mobility is a bigger life saver than armor that can be negated by head shots.
I feel like bots on higher difficulty is like playing Metal Gear Solid. You sneak around and complete most of your objectives by sneaking up and throwing an orbital barrage.
There are light armour suits with stealth buffs and the extra stamina helps me escape if I ♥♥♥♥ up my stealth.
In my personal opinion it's much more of a consideration vs bots since they have many more ways of dealing damage at range, but you can be just or more effective with the extra mobility provided by light armor. It really depends on how you like to play, what kind of squad you have, and your selection of strategems and weapons. I've had good success running a smoke orbital in heavy because limited mobility may not leave you an escape or advance route under fire. You can even use smoke to get close to a cannon tower with no cover around it.
Oh that sounds much more reliable than running at it and diving when it glows. I never would have trusted the smoke to actually conceal me from it before reading this, I gotta try it!
