So. A lot of people are dismissing the security threat outright, and saying it's an over-reaction. Let me paint you a picture that shows why it's not.

nProtect has had breaches (CVN-2005-0295. It let ANY process tell it what to do. Very bad design for a kernel level program. There are undoubtedly more vulns.), and is a VERY powerful piece of software. Finding a new vulnerability is completely feasible, if not expected in the future. Sony has a terrible track record on security.

So. What does this change? How about we think it through a bit.

A new exploit regarding nProtect on its own wouldn't be too terrible, as you could hide in the sea of internet connected devices. Your chances of being compromised is pretty low.

So Sony only has your email address right? Wrong. How do you think they can find out if someone is using a VPN? They're also gathering telemetry data. Things to include your IP, which is used to geolocate you.

So here's the thing so many of we PC players are concerned about. Sony gets compromised again, and the telemetry data gets got. That's now a target list to leverage the nProtect vulnerability / exploit and build a bot net, as well as gather whatever is on your computer. And there's literally no way you or your system would know.


Do you want a key logger on your PC? Cause that's how you get a key logger on your PC.

This is a far more serious things than some are acknowledging, and I figured I'd spell it out for people.

It took this to get you to not buy a PS5? I would have thought the complete lack of any games would have been enough of a reason to not buy a GAMES console. I haven't bought any modern video game console - except I guess for the Nintendo Switch, but even that I rarely buy games for because they're too damned expensive. Xbox? I broke down and got an Xbox One last gen to take some of the strain off of my 360's dying DVD drive. Playstation? I bought one for Gravity Rush 2 - and there were still a few decent exclusives at the time worth checking out, like Fist of the North Star, Project Diva: Future Tone (before it got ported everywhere), and Wipeout Omega Collection on PSVR.

But now...? Both Xbox and Playstation are compete game wastelands. Literally just $500 e-waste bricks with a monthly fee.

Sony claims inclusive and diversity but have screwed over 100 countries bricking their game. Sony are disgusting for doing this, until my fellow divers are reinstated my review remains negative and I play other games! #DIVETOGETHER

I dropped them when they removed other OS and found out the hard way that the model I picked up did not have the backward comparability like one of my friends. It blew my mind when I learned they started charging $$ for mp, and it still does that people willingly pay for it.
