Lasers would be instantenous. You wouldn't even realistically see them. There is no laser weapon in this game. Realistically.
Plants cause automaton non-rocket weapons of lower power to both slow down and deflect. I haven't used a sickle in a long time, but I would wager that automatons use some sort of ballistic. They also clearly use lasers (the pew-pew-pew double cannons + hulks + scout striders) and rockets (ignores plants and does not divert).
Maybe the general purpose automaton weapons use energy as a propellant, so rapid-fire gauss or railguns. Heavy devastators have backpacks which are filled with energy and the general trooper needs to cool down their weapons if they fire too much.
