Why? To good to give your fellow Helldivers a hug?

My selected emote is the high five, so if a people tries a hug, I cannot respond in kind. Is there a way to select any emote during the mission?

You can respond by pressing E while infront of them

The hug emote is a bit too intimate for a person I just met. Maybe after a few drops I'll return it.

Until then, learn to love my high five head butt.

I use the hug emote as a replication of the "Well! What is it!" emote from Dark souls
