If it's a 1v1 with a Charger, I deal with it in 1, at most 2 jumps to the side.
it's gonna be the same thing with a railgun later on, usually 2-3 shots with autocannon, or 2 with a railgun on the same leg will uncover it stripping the armor, you'll then notice the texture change, eg. flesh appearing. You can then finish it by simply unloading a breaker clip / regular ammo into the same spot.

Shoot at open places, the ass, or a leg exposed by someone else.
You're correct, the armor on chargers can't be damaged by the autocannon alone, you need something stronger like an EAT, RR, or Railgun to blow the armor off first.
Its great for versatility as well as being good as a utility and that it CAN tackle against Chargers but it ironically fails to be effective against it. Just bring a Grenade Launcher for the same job... And save a backpack slot for something that'll keep you alive. Honestly hope they update it so it CAN penetrate, I don't expect it to strip armor but its not worth to me if I can't use it like I feel it should. Not when the Railgun or the Grenade Launcher can be managed better against it.
Actually, no, that only works on it's hind legs as they're light armor. The front legs are like tank armor and your Autocannon shots just bounce off it.
The correct way is to shoot them at the back (legs, squishy part what have you), but you may as well use a Grenade Launcher for that than waste a backpack slot with an Autocannon - unless you got a person with Railgun (and then a bit of luck that they're not complete morons).
This is incidentally why people should diversify their loadouts.
1 at best 2 Railguns, some with CC (Nade or Flamethrower) and one with a Stalwart.
You're going to need it on 7+ missions.

How is any of this "ironic." Autocannons are weapons for dealing with light and medium armor, not heavy.
