how to change character name?

I never really got a chance to choose it just adopted my name from steam, is there a way to change it?

There is not a "character nickname", since it uses the STEAM account, it will use your STEAM nickname.

Only way is to change your steam nickname and wait for the servers to update the name and sync

That does not work, it stays your original steam name that you linked accounts with.

Helldivers 2 takes your current name when loading for the first time and that's your name on there. Weird way to handle it but yeah. Why I'm named this ;)

A week ago it allowed me to change my steam name 4 times and it would update to that steam name every time I got in game.

These are facts, it did many times before a week ago and then suddenly stopped working. Everyone got stuck with the current steam name at the time right before they patched.

I think it's because the account database is backed up due to being overloaded. The database has stopped functioning several times over the past 2 weeks -- which is why the global counters on the war table no longer function.

Updates to the account databse are probably being ratelimited to prioritise logins and mission rewards over anything else.

Think about it like this:
There are a limited number of requests the devs can make to for a change to the database per second.
Every request to change a name on the database is a request that isn't changing an account's reward value.
Since they're struggling to even maintain logins, they definitely don't have the bandwidth to update your name right now.
There's literally over a million people trying to play the game now, so every request counts.

Didn't realize what happened until some guy on HD2 starting calling me by my first name. Looked down just to see my first and last name separated by a period as my gamertag.
Sent a bug report over a day ago and uninstalled both steam and HD2. No change.
If my gamertag turns into my address, I'm throwing my computer out the window.
