Why are console players obsessed with open mic?
Every time I play with randoms, there's at least one console player who has open mic turned on, it's not that they're even using it to communicate, you just hear their tv in the background blasting into their mic, or they're coughing or grunting. It's even worse that their controllers have a built in mic so it's the lowest quality old man grunting imaginable. Is open mic set to default? Are they doing this on purpose?

Because they have only a handful of buttons on those little plastic controllers, they have to sacrifice the ability to shoot or dodge to set a push to talk.

(I'm half joking.)

Console players are smooth brains. I use a PS5 controller to couch play on my Steam Deck. I just bind the options button as the PTT button. HD2 defaults it to press and hold. Beyond that, a PS5 controller has a mute button next to the built in mic. They are smooth brains, what else can you expect.

As someone who also has a playstation let me help;
Playstation mic are in the controller now, and is basically always on. There's no way (At least in the few games I have) to do any push to talk. You can hook a headset up, but basically have the same problem, if you don't have an actual button on the side or on the cable youre basically open mic all the time.

Also, as per the comment above this one, Yeah sony made it a giant pain in the ass to do basically everything on the PS5. I had to download software to watch movies ffs. Turning it off is going through 3 menus now, you used to just be able to hold the PS button. I hate the damn thing. It was an impulse buy because they had never come to my town for 2 years until 3 came to our walmart and it was the last one and I was like, ♥♥♥♥, better get it before I never see it again.

Pretty sure most of them don't know options menu exists

I guess we can assume they don't know their mute button exists as well.
Just as some people don't seem to know that they can mute individual players, others don't know that their voice chat is set to always on.

They are not obsessed, like most people they are just ignotrant. But, every PS5 gamepad has a mic, its ON and open by default. And like with most people with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mics\mic discipline - they dont hear themselves in voicechat. So, untill they are told repeatedly that they have\are a problem, they keep on as they are. Its simply a norm for console lobby multiplayer.
