I did have the impression that it penetrated bits of the bugs that my primary with light pen could not.
Penetration depends on the angle at which your projectile strikes armor, not just where it hits. The further away you are from 90 degrees that bigger the chance that it will not fully penetrate or just bounce (in the case of the Autocannon).
Penetration is a prerequisite and easy to tell with the RPG/Recoilless projectile.
