Thoughts on "joel"
So for those that don't know this game has a game master. He can manipulate the game through the actual missions (causing events within them ) or the galaxy map. Like the creek alot of people seen the game memed about. Not to mention that we know the Automaton missions defend escorts are bugged..And probably purposefully as the devs keep radio silence on it. ( as far as I know )

It was at 20% liberation. Then over just 1 night it went back to 0 like a reset. And some planets are just straight taking forever to either defend or liberate. Which I believe even the Dev have said that we as helldivers were too efficient and were not meant to be succeeding so fast.

So now the possibility everything has slowed to a halt and we only win cause our new God named Joel allowed it. Or denied it.

This is based a little on assumption. And some of it based off of facts.

What do you guys feel about that the war is actually not in our control at all and only based on a narrative that the Game master desires. ( Basically what we do technically doesn't matter to a certain extent )

Edit- We just seen another planet. A grand mission one no less with alot of people on it at almost all times.
Went from 75% back to a mere 56%.

I feel if they are changing the numbers give us a narrative reason.. like a bug asteroid (yes. I know I am using a reference ) appeared and and pulled back our alot of our efforts rather than blankly changing the numbers.

I think this would improve alot of the reception if reasons or dynamic story telling of why said things happened would be great in a community war effort game.

Cause enemies can have advances as well. Just like us. And even new tools that can be added to the war effort.

I hate the concept.

I was soloing a game earlier and for some reason while attempting to load up an artillery unit, little explosions kept popping of and knocking me down. No idea why or where they came from. it was almost like the game was telling me to stop doing what i was doing. so I gave up moved on to the titans and wouldn't you know the little explosions stopped.

Felt like i was being trolled.

If theirs a guy and his one job is to wipe progress from Liberating planets or setting the community back then that's Fd but thats one thing. Some admin on a power trip personally going into your game and manipulating the flow is a whole separate issue entirely.

If the "GM" is reading this then i want you to know I blame you for those explosions and I hate you. stay out of my games.

So you just never destroyed the enemy mortar battery? Because those are on the map dude, you can go kill them and it stops.

Reminds me of a DM that flubs dice rolls to make the game more "interesting" and by interesting I mean "oh no, you fought well and rolled a 20? Rocks fall everybody dies, planet unliberated."

When did the bugs get mortars? lol. it wasn't like a mortar impact and they didint even do much damage. it was like something popped on my shoulder and then i fell over. as soon as i gave up and walked 10ft away it stopped. first time anything like that has ever happened after 20 lvls.

Which planet? Because quite a few of them have UXO that you can stumble on. Found more than a few nukes in fact, set off by the enemies without me being anywhere near.

I dont think you understand and I get why.

there was no real "explosions" imagine a power ranger taking damage and the little sparks coming off their suit when they take damage.

Im next to the artillery cannon, I havnt interacted with the terminal because im transporting the shells to the foot of the gun first and as im transporting a shell sparks fly out of my arm and i hear a "pop" then i fall over. no damage. get back up, pick up a shell then move 5 ft "pop" sparks fly out of my back then i fall over.

I leave and then it stopped. It was bizarre. it truly felt like an invisible force was just knocking me over as if to say " stop doing what you're doing and move on. "

idk which planet i was on.

Love the idea of a "dungeon master".

I don't like that he basically undid all progress on Erata(sp) in the Terminid Territory when it was near full liberation using only a click, and would secretly reinforce Automaton progress on raided planets (like Malevelon Creek) after peak times, when most people slept (as was revealed by the devs).

There at least needs to be incentive for doing things like that, because it feels like a general waste of time and effort.

If it wasn't one of the buried ordnance maps then you're describing a bug. The gamemaster doesn't do that.

F#$k Joel, I blame all my misfortunes on Joel he is probably stirring sh**t seeing me cause miracles in this game. I have solid proof that Joel specifically extra-bounced my Eagle500K pokeball towards my teammates.

Planet liberation and overall war progress is throttled and lead on rails by the devs. Our community doesnt really determine the war effort in the ways we had expected.

The topic is more covered in detail here

incredible how many players think the devs have something out for them or gamers in general. the dm thing is something online games have done since ages, they just didnt make a big deal about it because no one likes to be told about the man behind the curtain.
capybaras are cool Feb 29, 2024 @ 10:33pm
imo it was an awful idea for the devs to tell everyone about the dm moreso than having him.
WhiteCrow Feb 29, 2024 @ 10:34pm
The only tragedy here is that his parents named him Joel.

I had friend in highschool once named Joel. His family moved to our town from Alaska. He was good guy.

If they didn't tell us, we'd assume it was bugged because the progress kept being deleted. I'm not sure which is worse, they're probably both just as bad. I guess bugs can be fixed though.
