You may, or may not be limited to what difficulty level you are able to solo because the missions do not scale on number of players.
As a solo player, if you are not able to run missions of the highest levels you may not be able to get some resources that unlock late game buffs so it may be an unfulfilling experience for you.
If you like a challenge and are willing to accept that the missions are not tuned for solo play you can still have loads of fun. Different fun perhaps.
Yes you can play solo- I have completed HellDive missions solo although it can be frustrating and not what I d call fun. Playing lvls 5,6,7 solo is very doable once you learn the game. I often do it to farm samples as when playing with others they often get dropped or we dont get out with them.
Arguably the most fun to be had is with a team though and when u get 4 people all who can play, HellDive becomes a breeze.
So answer is yes-id strongly recommend this game to anyone-even if you just want to solo. Theres plenty of content for everyone. Also I spent last week complaining in the forums about the retuning- They fixed it -You have all the tools-use them well now and you will win:)
Are you telling me that are missions that are gated by number of players, OR the difficulty is so "hard" that solo players can't do?
Here is someone playing at max difficulty solo, might wanna give this a look aside from the previous posts.

If you really only looking to buy this for a single player experience you should probably look elsewhere. Because warframe is a pure power fantasy with stuff that kills whole rooms while this game is wildly different.
You have limited ammunition for a start, you have no health reg, your basic weapons cam only do so much, you have no powers to speak of. You are a soldier, not a demigod as in warframe, like not even remotely close.
Edit: Its not that solo play is impossible, quite the contrary as can be seen in the above video. But to get to this level of gameplay knowledge, having everything unlocked etc. will take you upwards of 150 hours easily. So you have to ask yourself if you want to reach this level of gameplay or play it rather casually on the side. Because at a certain point, as you surely know, you play warframe on autopilot. You cant in this game.
As a solo player you have 5 respawns. After that its game over. And you can & will die a lot. Especially at the beginning.
And this isnt something like your basic warframe mission design. The enemy respawns. They will keep coming. This is like steel path with a fresh frame and entry level weapons if you want to compare those games
Games like Earth Defense Force are way more forgiving and can easily be played solo.
So, you are just saying it's "hard" for a solo player, until it isn't. Thanks. I already heard that "it's too hard for a solo player" many times, none of them amused me, I bet this game will be easy to beat solo on the hardest difficulty after learning how to play the game properly. Thanks to explain.
Some elite units also have weakpoints on their back that can be hard to get to solo. You can still kill them from the front, but the weakpoint there is generally much smaller.
The other thing that makes Solo more difficult is that you only get 5 respawns, but in multiplayer you get 5 per player, as well as the option to recover after they're exhausted (assuming the living player lasts long enough for reinforce to come off cooldown).
I do not recommend this game if you plan to avoid multiplayer entirely. Adding even a single additional player makes this game MUCH more fun.
Listen. You CANNOT compare a game like L4D to Helldivers 2 solo.
In Helldivers 2, especially on higher difficulties it's going to be swarming with enemies.
In comparison, L4D you can just shoot and kill targets with the same gun, as long as you have ammo.
Here, that doesn't work. You're going to need to have guns for fodder and armored enemies. Stratagems aka call ins are an additional help, but they have cooldowns.
I am NOT saying it's impossible to solo on high difficulty, but that would be people with a lot of hours into the game, not something a casual player can do.
If you watch the video, the guy thats playing that mission IS having a hard time. He constantly needs to have map awareness and make decisions in split seconds or its game over.
If the mission timer runs out, any death is permanent. You have no access to your orbital lasers, fighter pilot bombing runs etc nothing. Only the gear you are currently carrying. Ammo going low? Either find some or tough luck. Enemies drop nothing. You dont even get XP from killing them. A whole bunch of heavy armored foes closing in? Pray you havent wasted any ammo for your anti armor weapons or you are screwed.
And judge me all you want but he's a vastly better shot than I am! ;-)
