It makes me sad that they can't buff underperforming weapons to make them useful.
So the fact aim sway when even crouch walking is trash, as well as return fire aim skewing that enemies do not suffer from regardless of news blurb claims? Yeah, that throws the laser rifle in the dumpster. That zero recoil stat is a scam.
This is also why people are mistaking the laser backpack for "Overpowered" The laser is actually very weak against anything but teammates. But the drone is allowed to keep the laser on their target full time instead of only being allowed to drill a beam through a weakpoint skull if the enemy is not fighting back, and you are aiming more carefully than a damned marksman rifle.
The fact the heat meter is trash in 3rd person sure does not help either. Oh boy make the crosshair spin wildly without distinct color coding, and have a soft beep you won't be able to hear in a series of explosions and monster screams.
In perfect lab conditions, it is good on paper. In reality, actual gameplay (and trash UI) make it underperform.
Sure, I CAN carefully burn the skulls out of a medium robot with it when I try. Or, I could go back to the defender SMG which can do the job and also quick kill small bots with a kill combo with a mountain of ammo.
And against bugs? Even on an ice world, too much spam for the laser's pathetic heat capacity to keep up with, even against just small trash.
We have a weapon punished damage and handling wise "Because infinite ammo!" without actually having infinite ammo. It isn't a skill issue, because clearing missions 7+ with it feels like the laser is your enemy trying to betray you instead of satisfying.
Add an overheat scale next to the crosshair.
Damage should increase dramatically with beam concentration on a single target.
Or the damage should increase with the reheat.
We use the same word for Scythe and Sickle
Anyway...
Using it as my main till I get the other laser gun, its pretty good if you have some distance to work with. Just sweep the beam across each enemy. Don't shy away from using up a reload. It has the same amount of reloads as other rifles.
