Opinions on heavy armor?
With armor rating supposedly functioning now, is there any good reason to bring heavy armor? Does it help you actually survive against bugs and/or bots, or is the increased stamina and speed from light still more worth it on most occasions?

Personally I use a light armor with 50% explosion resist and 30% recoil reduction vs automatons and light armor with extra padding so it's effectively a medium rating vs bugs.

Wondering if I should give a heavy armor set a try, if it makes a noticable difference or not and if the trade-off is worth it.

There's no reason to use heavy armor. It doesn't provide any meaningful upside in exchange for taking away a lot of your movement.

But, that's only if you care strictly about stats. If you like the look of a heavy set - use it. It ultimately doesn't really matter, and it won't affect the flow of your missions very much. The only important stat about armor in this game is the passive ability. Some people might go "but the movement speed..!" but I disagree. The difference in movement speed only matters in a long distance sprint -- and most engagements happen in close range. You'll be fine.

I feel decently tanky (sometimes) in heavy armor and there are some sets I like, so I use it.

That being said, getting headshotted entirely ignores your body armor and kills you in ~2 shots, so I dont *actually* see a point in using anything but light armor.

Heavy armor gives you like 2 more hits to live but it's not enough to offset being slower and taking more hits due to that

You aren't ever going to BE a tank, but heavy does help you survive getting surprised by a hunter or something similar. You'll be able to survive more glancing hit from heavies, but anything solid still ends you.

My own estimation, is that Heavy helps you survive mistakes / surprises but is harder to avoid getting into those situations, and light will die fast to a mistake / surprise but can reposition and avoid those scenarios

Yeah, the passive 50% explosion resist makes the biggest difference in automaton missions, I can't imagine using anything else in those.

Still undecided on favorite passive for bugs. I feel like extra padding on light just barely lets me survive bile spewers grazing me with their spew attack sometimes that would otherwise oneshot me, but extra stims and stim time might be better for a flamethrower being able to keep spraying into a horde longer without having to back away from the chokepoint and in general rush into nests with 2 seconds of extra safety net to break some bug holes.

Currently heavy armor is more of a penalty than an aid. You lose "HALF" of your stamina, and a significant chunk of your running speed to be able to take roughly 1 extra hit from a normal enemy. (2 from the weakest enemies)

As it currently stands, there is absolutely no reason to EVER use heavy armor for anything other than the aesthetics. As they actually LOWER your survivability.

It stinks, as is.

People were salty about the weapon changes, but I'm more salty that armor went from non-functional to bad.

Kill your mobility so you can survive maybe an extra hit, that is if you don't get hit in the head.

thats not true, heavy armor let you survive more hits so you cans hoot longer back and kill more enemies.
And if someone take the stamina booster you can run long enough before exhausted.

IT depens on your playstyle. Hit and run or pure firepower. both are valid and both are fun. i switch regulary between light and heavy armor because i have fun with both playstyles.
Useless as hell broski.
Move slower = die faster.

Heavy armour is (even with armour functioning now) not in an ideal place, the amount of movement speed you lose can be a massive issue when fighting bugs (who can bog you down even more) since they will just swarm you if you ever let them get proper out of control, especially when you consider you can make yourself just as tanky with the portable shield pack.

Trouble will be finding the balance.

Currently its just a better idea to focus on light armor and their passives over losing the mobility and stamina to avoid hits rather than take them. Every 50 armor points only marginally improves your durability and thats IF it doesnt already one shot you or hits your head and thus both gets doubled and bypasses armor. A 50% resistance to explosion damage against the bots and stims/grenade count buffs for the bugs (for stim regen tanking/single target or bug hole elimination) will save your life more than at best a extra hit or 2 more durability on a coinflip and less ability to get to safety at a moment's notice ever will.

Even if the devs buff armor to double the hits you can take at heavy armor and reduce or remove the player head hitbox damage bonus, I think the hit stagger against bots and hunters is still going to make anything other than dex min-maxing still a circumstantial trade off worth at best. I am not asking them to make players 100% invincible to small arms or claws hits at 150-200 armor like heavy armor in the first game did but being more resistant or immune to more forms of hit stun would do wonders for player choice and tactics.

There are only three defenses currently in this game.

1. Speed
2. Detection reduction
3. Shield pack.

Armor rating will not make a difference when it comes to your survival in any given encounter.

If I want to roleplay a comicon stormtrooper, you know the type...barely fits in the costume if at all...then heavy armor hits the spot.
