High CPU Temps, low cpu usage, any ideas?
Thanks to Geeklegion and Krowle for the information provided in their respective posts, but TL:DR, there's an issue with 12th/13th/14th gen cpu's and various motherboard's default settings that cause it to draw way more power than necessary, which can cause these insanely high temperatures. Follow the links in the answer if you're having similar issues with specific games.

Other useful tips: VoodooChile - Disable the ingame fps limiter and instead use vsync/external limiters, the helldivers one specifically can put the CPU under load, there's apparently similar issues with the ingame render scale being anything under naitive, (which makes sense, it shifts the load from GPU to CPU)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Been having a blast with this game, but noticed recently it's causing my cpu to heat up to extreme temps (90-100) despite being on a relatively low load.

I've only had the issue with this game specifically, so far anyway, and it's an issue I'd really like to resolve. I'd read on here previously that the ingame frame limiter and the sampling mode have been causing temperature spikes, and messing with those settings have definitely prevented it from staying quite so high temperature wise, but it will still spike up there.

To sum it up, there is a bad default setting on intel motherboards that are allowing too much voltage and this can be fixed by removing the auto setting. Steps 1-3 in the "Summary of Fixes from Article" post lowered my temps by 15 degrees and has fixed 4 games that have been crashing for me, including this one. Try it and spread the word if it works for you.

I second this. Typical user won't notice it.
It will, if you're one of those bad motherboard with auto setting, which surpassing the cpu limit.
Here is some explanation unbiased vid for easier view.

best guess. Game is ramping up a few cores on your multi core processor to 100% and leaving the rest idling, making it look like it's under low load but in reality the cpu is struggling on those individual cores.

Can you check the individual core usage vs temperature?

It's also possible your cooling isn't working properly for the cores in question, be it the paste or the fit of your cooler.

Temperature issue is always a hardware probleme

Disable the in-game FPS limiter. Use V-sync or limit FPS from GPU driver or 3rd party software like RTSS.

Having same exact issue no solution in sight, only seems to be effecting certain people. CPU problems only with this game, power draw is ridiculously high.

replace thermal paste

Use MSI afterburner and make your own fan profile.

If i dont use it my fans just scream when I play this and most games and temps go to 80+

When I do use it and control the fans myself I can keep them quiet and keep temps from ever going over 76.

Can also on most towers pull side of case off which helps a lot usually and if you still need more stick a cheap amazon fan there.

I have a very high end pc that i built 6 months ago. Havent had cpu thermal issues until playing this game. Highest ive seen other games go is 90C max but this game will easily push 100c out of nowhere. Also it crashes my discord no clue why but it likes to do that.

without knowing anything about your setup it is not possible to help you..

bad airflow, thermal paste old or bad, cpu fan bad.

i would start with locking the FPS to 60

12th, 13th and 14th gen processors suffer from deformation of heat spreader because of the socket mounting pressure points.

They sell after market products for this.

I know every Asus board (only brand I use) Over Volts by a lot. Turning the SVID to Typical Scenario will lower the voltage drastically and the temps.

It's the game, not people's hardware.

Bad optimization nothing you can do without getting new rig besides wait for patches to come in...
