[Hot take] Shield Backpack is peak brainless

The SBP only exists to allow a sub-par player to survive in missions they are not ready for and actively encourages people to not think about anything while rewarding said mindless gameplay. Anything the SBP can save you from better positioning and stratagem use can also save you from while also helping the team.

Every team would be better off if the person who took the SBP didn't take the SBP and instead took a stratagem that allowed for quick and expedient destruction of enemy assets/enemies or an actual support stratagem such as turrets or a resupply backpack.

That being said, I harbor no ill will on those who decide to take the SBP as this is a casual game and not a super competitive E-Sports type game. play the way you want to, just make sure you don't get me killed in the process.

There is SOME synergy with the shield and weapons that can be interrupted by damage or thrown off, like the laser cannon. That's about it. It really isn't necessary on any difficulty.

Then again, a rando who picks a shield at least can't waste the slot on, say, the 380mm.
