Bad Frames on the Legion 5 Pro 2021 Gaming Laptop
hey all,

I play Helldivers 2 on the Legion 5 pro 2021 which has a RTX 3070 8GB, Ryzen 7 5800H (3.20GHz Base Speed), 16Gb 3200MHz RAM. I used to get good stable 60FPS on High-Max settings on Ultra Quality and 2560x1600, but now I have recently been experiencing bad frames and stutter so I had to lower my graphics settings to a more optimised setup (so a mix of Low to High settings) and even then I am still on 30-45 frames when on the planet.

Lowering my display resolution to 1920x1200 has no effect on the frames. It seems like lowering the settings has no impact on increasing the frames but when I increase settings or the resolution scaling to sampling it drastically decreases my performance. One thing I hate the most when it comes to gaming is when lowering the settings has no increase on performance.

I don't understand why my performance has worsened over time and I have monitored the temperatures and I am sure that no throttling is occurring. If there is any tutorials or solutions that you guys know that I could potentially implement, it would be much appreciated. thank you

As a straight up test try turning off Global Illumination and the Star quality thing I forgot the name. For some ungodly reason those two are absolute performance busters even on beefy machines and they don't really do much that is visible to the fidelity of the game. Also locking frames may also help.

I'm just spit-balling some ideas that I've seen people talk about that helped with my performance and heating issues.

The game is horrendously optimized though. For what it looks like it should not be as resource hungry as it is.

Double your RAM, and your vid card is at least short by 8GB as well. What you have is a PC that plays 2021 games adequately (not greatly), but 2024 games horribly.

I think the optimised settings that I am running already have these settings off or on low, but I will double check and let you know of any changes. Appreciate the help :steamhappy:

But the problem is that it was fine in the beginning, 60fps on the 2k resolution with a 3070 is perfect but now it has worsened after some updates. Besides I have heard from people with 1080s and 1080TIs getting 60fps so my specs should be fine to enjoy this game on 60fps

I have a feeling you were using the built in upscaling before. At 1440p ultrawide with max settings on a 5800x3d and a 3090 with a slight OC I get like 80-90fps on planets (native). The 3070 mobile is not even half as powerful as a desktop 3090 and the CPU is also significantly more restricted on a laptop (this game is quite CPU demanding).

So based on that yeah 30-45 fps is about what you should be getting on that machine at 1440p/1600p native.

If lowering the resolution doesn't change the framerate, I would place the blame on either a RAM/bandwidth limitation (make sure it's running at the right speed) or a CPU limitation (possibly something to do with the anticheat).

You can try uninstalling the anticheat and then verifying files to reinstall it.

I also have a Legion. And for me it was the same. Last year the game used to run smoothly. I was getting 60-80 fps on lower settings. Idk if there is way more enemies now or what ever but ye. The same I can't get to those numbers at all rn.

Before I got my 9800x3d-4090. I was using the 12800hx, 3070ti 150w, 64gb ddr5 legion laptop, even on low, it wasn't a solid 60 on diff 8 and above, below diff 8 it was a little bit more stable.

I found locking the frame rate to 60-65 helped for me when was I was on my laptop.

Also, day one this game ran fine on my laptop, now it is a complete mess since all the new patches got pushed out.
