Just beware that the game is still suffered from launch issue, so your mileage may vary.
Also randoms are not -THAT- bad. Most of the times. (I assume this will get better with time)
That beeing said, I think I spotted first videos of ppl doing solo-runs on high difficulties.
Should you solo? No
Later difficulties can ramp up INSANELY fast. And the missions are RNG and sometimes, your numbers just don't come out how you'd like.
the random groups tend to be like a very big premade, they develop a shorthand a pattern just as specific as a small group.
But Hell divers is the one game i think is so specifically built around co operation and communication that tog et teh most fun it certainly needs voice coms and preferably between friends , im not saying the randoms wont be able to play i just think they will be missing out on the core fun of the game.
