What is the purpose for Autocannon special weapon?
Its just bad.
Turret is amazing, but handheld version is just.... bad, regular heavy machinegun neutralizes the same targets just as effectively and does not require another person to load it, and it can't even scratch armored targets, despite even the tip clip showing it killing charger bug frontally.

It *IS* a l2p moment, but not in the sense that you're just not good. You just aren't using it right. I'm on Hard difficulty just unlocked extreme so take what I say with a grain, but you need to use it less like a Recoil and more like a powerful heavy cannon. It won't pierce charger armor, but it will do INSANE damage to its weak point and I believe that, yes, the legs do have less armor. Don't worry about that though, if you take the Auto Cannon you're not going for AP you're going for flank-and-destroy. It's not really meant for chargers, though.

The AC shines when you use it as a very powerful horde clear, or to decimate groups of lightly armored foes or instant kill vomit bugs or the other slightly armored bugs. You can also use it to destroy bug holes in nests, but the aim is finnicky. Keep trying, fellow Diver, it's just a different playstyle and it's okay if you prefer the recoilless over it. I was using the RR until I tried out the AC and I feel like I can use it better, it's just that I need to git gud at flanking Chargers and quickly unloading on their weak points. God speed, for liberty and I hope my advice helped. I will go read the rest of the comments now.

My friend has been running autocannon and has the disposable call in, while I run the supply pack and grenade launcher. It's a great set up, he carries the supply i call in, I carry his backpack for teamload, he calls in disposables for big targets so teammates can support fire on big targets like chargers. We can get a lot of firepower down range if we play close to each other.

Hold the phone... You can shoot the autocannon into bug holes to collapse them and not use grenades? Today I learned something new.
The Autocannon has med armour pen chargers have high armour. if you want to kill with is you need someone to distract it so you can shoot it's ass or somehow damage one of it's front legs enough that you can rip it off with full auto.

when you fight automaton, that autocannon will be your best friend

LOL it is the BEST way to deal with just about anything but you need situational awareness and don't shoot anything within 10' of yourself and your golden

Chargers won't go down as quickly as the picture shows but yes, the legs is the best place to aim on chargers from the front. I believe it's best to be targeting the inner connecting part, not the outside armored parts that can deflect. But if you do struggle with chargers definitely go for the recoiless instead, much more efficient there if you want to take them head on.

Is there anywhere on a Charger that the Autocannon will penetrate besides the butt? If so, that would make it a lot more useful.

you can also do it with airstrikes or artillery, but its not always reliable and on a much longer cooldown and the grenade launcher works too.

I have try this many time but if you aim between leg from the side not the front you could deal damage, but if you aim a lil bit higher the shot will bounce, so the best use it just shot at the back dont bother shooting everywhere else

So the autocannon is good because it's essentially useful in most situations except heavy armor and even then it's sometimes good against heavy armor if you can hit gaps in the armor.

It has a lot of ammo and you can reload it yourself if you have the backpack. It does a lot of damage on direct impact, has AoE, you can close holes and kill factories with it.

Comparing it to the recoiless is not really what you want to do with it since the recoiless is explicitly for anti-armor and is much more efficient if someone else reloads it. The autocannon is more for versatility and is actually better if you reload it yourself. Most of my friends have been heavily using the autocannon and I've been seeing it do a lot of work.

So to sort of summerize based on your last post here:

Recoiless: You and friend work together to absolutely dumpster a heavy armored enemy

Railgun: You alone punch holes into an armored enemy with a bit less impact and damage.

Autocannon: You become supporting fire, dealing with crowds, destroying eggs, holes, and factories, and sometimes punching holes in weakpoints of big targets. Also doing big damage to unarmored durable enemies.

This is an incredibly good review of the 3 weapons (i only tried railgun once, I didn't like it personally but I'll have to give it more testing later). This poster perfectly lines out what the AC has going for it. Cheers, diver

Edit to say: You can also use it to snipe spore spewers in like 2 shots. Keep that in mind.. very powerful utility imo. Saves you having to get close enough to aim a stratagem.

Autocannons chunk the tank bug. The autocannon turret and missile launcher turrets both shred tanks if they are able to get shots off on them.

..did I not? I clicked edit. The hell? My bad, I didn't mean to bloat.

Edit: that's why I said edit. Perhaps I clicked edit and then just scrolled down a bit too much instead of clicking on the message. Woops.
