Read on the GitHub Proton repo that it is working but have not tested it on my deck.
Might have to buy and refund if it does not work.

It never will unless they remove the rootkit anti-cheat software they chose to use. Linux doesn't like that.

That's what I though but this comment suggests otherwise:

It's already working on the deck via desktop mode. Desktop is Linux.

"On Steam Deck I was able to just download the game and run it now, didn't have to switch to desktop mode or switch Proton versions at all."

I have it working on Desktop Mode in Proton GE 7.49
Gotta lower the graphics quite a bit, but it actually doesn't run too bad. Can't vouch for fps without the Gaming Mode overlay, but it feels fine. Stutters a little bit on loading in.

I managed to get the game running last night on my deck, proton 7.49, desktop mode, played for a little over an hour, did the tutorial, and first mission. Don't change to full-screen, leave it borderless window or next boot it will stay as a black screen. They say proton 7.55 works as well, haven't tried that myself yet as I've had success with 7.49. Game runs rather well turning settings to low, and render quality to balanced. If you set it to preformance it's even better but, looks pretty crummy.
At low with balanced I didn't have too many frame dips, I didn't have the overlay because it was desktop mode, but I would say at minimum it was consistently 45 fps, only dips were explosive strategems making the game stutter for a moment before continuing. Maybe a half second of stutter each time.
Other than that, had a fantastic time playing it. If the controls don't work at first, use the touch screen to navigate the menus and when you're in game they should work.

I have proton GE 8.30 playing in gaming mode ATM with a solid 30fps on high setting and render scale on quality

I changed it to full-screen and am getting the black screen on boot. Is there a way to change it back from the files or something?

Yes, there is a configuration file you can change that's relatively easy, or you can use a steam launch parameter. I.have a tab with both methods, ill copy and paste here.

Config file -
I had the same issue and in my case it was because I set the game to fullscreen.

The only way to change it is by modifying the config file, which you can find here:

steamapps/compatdata/553850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Arrowhead/Helldivers2/user_settings.config

Then, just change the following lines and save the file:

fullscreen = false

borderless_fullscreen = true

Launch parameter -
In Steam, right click Helldivers 2 under the My Games list on the left, select properties, and click the "Set launch options" button.

Paste in: -window –fullwindow

I should say I haven't had to use either, but was reading about it earlier, hope it helps.

I can confirm it works great now in game mode.

It works, even w/o going to desktop mode after using Proton 7-49GE. I think u have to run it the first time on desktop tho. But after that, I have been able to launch directly through Steam in gaming mode.

Yeah, patch seems to of really helped with compatability, may have to start in desktop for the anticheat, but I played for about 4 hours last night, only had one crash last night when I was looking at warbonds directly after a mission and the host disbanded the game. Ran great for those 4 hours, no stutter on explosions, good fun, played in game mode, only issue was the crash, and a small amount of artefacting on the edges where snow and ice met sometimes. All in all a very fun shooter, glad it works.
