Be careful with GameGuard
GameGuard uses rootkits to proactively prevent cheat software from running. GameGuard hides the game application process, monitors the entire memory range, terminates applications defined by the game vendor and INCA Internet to be cheats (QIP for example), blocks certain calls to Direct X functions and Windows APIs, keylogs keyboard input, and auto-updates itself to change as new possible threats surface.

Since GameGuard essentially works like a rootkit, players may experience unintended and potentially unwanted side effects. If set, GameGuard blocks any installation or activation of hardware and peripherals (ex. a mouse) while the program is running. Since GameGuard monitors any changes in the computer's memory, it will cause performance issues when the protected game loads multiple or large resources all at once.

It's unacceptable for a game to use such an old and harmful AntiCheat software. Just for your information, there's literally no AAA game that ever used this. Just a bunch of very old mmos, like Metin2, 9Dragons, etc. Frankly, the devs should issue a public statement on this, as they are installing a Rootkit Access software on your PC without telling you of the potential risks and side-effects.

Some hands on info :

Here's a thread from the Undecember community (another game that uses GameGuard) and the issues that came with it. It contains a lot of useful info about how this AC works and what it does :

Here is the GameGuard removal tool Undecember devs posted after their players had issues with it : https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1549250/view/6456498378615365698

Here is an interesting read about how kernel level access from Genshin Impact's anticheat (which is better than GameGuard and still failed) can be used by malicious third parties to infect you with ransomware : https://archive.is/DiYzn

what a disappointment, I'm not buying this until it can actual run properly on deck and with a more reasonable anticheat system

There are no non invasive anti cheats that work. And yes cheating in a co op game shouldn't be allowed especially when it's peer to peer connection and it's crossplay. You see why that's bad in elden ring, a game with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anti cheat; people have their entire pcs crashed by cheating invaders.
If someone could use the program to remotely crash the pc of someone else then the developers of that program were inexcusably unconcerned with computer security (and no, I don't mean by using an invasive anti-cheat or something like that). One of the maxims in computing is "don't trust the client".

In a P2P game that would mean that every person has their game which they use as the server, and all the other people you play with are treated as clients. Your client should not just trust what the other clients tell it, it should check that things are as they should be. If someone is cheating their state shouldn't be reasonably close to what your own client thinks it should be, and you should get a warning about that and options to kick them and so on.
My guy, the cheaters just keep spawning things in or making a billion explosions happening at the same tim. They don't go into your pc and turn it off, they over load it. I won't even talk about what you said in regards to p2p servers since it reads like a babbling baby

well if someone detects an rce then it's going to be ugly but I give the devs the benefit of the doubt

Yah - they’ve really proven these past few years they can be trusted - NOT.

Doubt other more tolerated anti cheats like EAC are as cheap.

That was what i thought as well. They went with the cheapest option, instead of paying a bit more for EAC.

careful guys, gameguard is going to steal your credit card number

where have i said that? i only wanted to inform some people, and shed some light on what this anti-cheat does. why do you have to belittle others for posting info? any kind of intrusive software like this that has kernel acess, is a potential risk to your pc, wether by impacting performance, or creating backdoors for malignant access. any person that spent a few years on the internet will tell you to prioritize your security. the bad parts about this anti-cheat is that it impacts pefromance negatively and can mess up your peripherals, as well as cause other weird issues. I feel like a lot of you people are very defensive about your purchase. sunk cost fallacy or just ignorance? either way, if you like the game, play it by all means.

Gameguard is one of the worst most intrusive 3rd party anti-cheats on the market. I don't care how good a game was, if it has Gameguard I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

QQ lol. Grow up.
Remnar Feb 8, 2024 @ 12:42pm
Instead of using some 3rd party hack for anti-cheat, why not code the game in such a way, so that it can't be cheated? I know Unreal Engine has multiple places to put code, and one of them is server side. That means players can't access those variables. My theory is, a server side script could be made, to look at your character to see any anomalies, or any other such things, and adjust it accordingly. I am not that smart and I thought of that. Makes me wonder what kind of idiots make games.

I don't have any stake in this argument; I've been excited for HD2 since the trailer and was excited to play as soon as it finished installing. Learning about the anti-cheat and its ineffectiveness, I've decided to uninstall the game before playing it and refunding it soon if this issue is not resolved. I really want to play this game, I even got the Super Citizen Edition to support what seems like a great game. I really hope Arrowhead does the right thing.
People really out here defending Sony using one of the most archaic, ineffective, fossilized anti-cheats out there. It's basically only used for cheap, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ F2P Korean MMOs that don't care about using anything better.

Sony has no excuse for using such a terrible piece of software. ANYTHING would be better than nProtect Gameguard. EAC would be better. Battleye would be better. DENUVO WOULD BE BETTER.

They could have chosen any number of the decently "reputable" anti-cheats, but they decided to choose one that I, and many others, will refuse to install on my machine, lest it gets ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bricked. Which HAS been happening to some players. It's not common, but it's a risk.

The devs claim that it doesn't run on PC startup, and it uninstalls with the game. But that HASN'T BEEN TRUE for several games that use it.

I got bricked and had to restore from my NAS (thankfully it is often backed up). I've been running the game in a VM since I like helldivers.
