At the mo its online only but I am hoping similar to back 4 blood they implement an optional offline mode. If it was a battle royale or something I would understand but why have a solo play option but not an offline option? They will announce a lot more about the game in the coming week or 2 so hopefully we know a lot more then.

That's awfully pessimistic, given that Helldivers is still popular for online co-op now more than 8 years after its PC Steam release because the global campaign (whatever it's flaws, and I never liked the idea of eliminating an entire enemy race from campaign play temporarily because it would get "taken out first) kept players invested, some for thousands of hours of play (in my case a few hundred). If HD2's campaign is as fun/compelling, I'm sure it will have many years of popularity.

That said, I would assume as with Helldivers, if you want to play solo, you just set your session so no one can join you (i.e, not public, and friends can't join you). Then you can enjoy being a gaming hermit, nobody will bother you :)

But as with HD1, HD2 is presumably "built from the ground up for online and local co-op," so if that's not your bag, I'd go play something else instead of playing an online co-op focused game that has no story and isn't really optimized for solo playing in the higher difficulty levels in particular (just based on the first game).

As with HD1, it appears to be a game based on objectives, and it' s generally not been easy in the first game to solo defend objectives while enemies assault the objective points. Unless you want to cheese it and drop "enemy attractor beacons" everywhere, and then sort of what is the point? :) Chances are good you'll want to play with at least one other player :)

Agree with all of this. I guess there is always the local coop issue though. It was great in helldivers 1 but I guess the only way this one would work would be split screen? I dno. Game looks amazing I think but I do feel its a pity there are those who loved HD1 because of the couch coop aspect (thats how I and my brothers played it) and that aspect is gone from sequel. I am still very excited for it mind you and as it happens my brothers and I all have gaming rigs so we will be on this day one no doubt.

NO
This needs offline and playable in solo for it to be worth their asking price. Loved Helldivers 1, but its impossible on mid/high tier difficulties which means you are stuck playing super boring easy maps with little to no enemies and no progression possible to get to boss fights. Amazing game, but it was not a complete experience without the help of others and thats just flawed game design. All online populations dwindle or die at some point. Id hate it becoming unplayable in the future.

Yeah, specially if Helldivers launches with crippling problems as it is the norm with most games.

Sadly nowadays one has to hope for a comeback from a failed launch in a lot of onlines games :(

Regardless if it's still possible to play solo, it's unacceptable and unethical to have the game be online only. Prime example of the absolute worst case scenario is payday 3.

Someone did ask this on the discord the game devs did reply with this -
Q - Does Helldivers depend on a central server? If that server went down would I still be able to play single player? Sorry I am just worried about the game, its a really good game.
A - You should be able to still play offline single player, if the servers are down/offline. You just can't participate in the Galactic War until servers are back up.

[Source - Discord Helldivers 2 server in Search just type offline and this comment will high light ]

Same as HD1 tbh

At the bottom of the page you can read - You can download and play this content on the main PS5 console associated with your account (through the “Console Sharing and Offline Play” setting) and on any other PS5 consoles when you login with your same account. So i guess if the game can be played on PS5 offline then i think on pc it should as well. Take this with a pinch of salt as we can only get to know this when the game comes out.

but how much game is locked behind online play`

right now helldivers 1 has just 500 people, that doesnt sound like many people would be there to play it online.

dont repeat the mistake of anthem.
