For the most part there's a simple workaround to do what they're supposed to do without pressing actually pressing them, so in the end, i only had two bound in a way that i could easily reach press mid-combat, and the rare times i actually used them i kept mixing them up.
Outside of combat, it wasn't really much of a problem since i could take my time, but it was still slightly annoying.
For most of everything else, being limited to eight directions isn't much of a problem thanks to the focus button, but there were still a few specific situations (mostly outside of combat) where i would've liked being able to dodge more precisely.
There's also this other thing that might be easier on controller, but it's difficult to say for sure.
Overall, keyboard + mouse feels way more natural to me, just in general, and that's what matters most. The slight annoyances i had to deal with here and there are not ones i'd call problematic enough to make me use an input method that doesn't feel nearly as natural to me.
I'd say try both (and maybe also just keyboard?) and see if you noticeably prefer one over the other.
