TUNIC

The random text was strange at first
but now it just gets on my tits to be honest. I dont know what anything is, even the things I personally own you have to use them to know what something does and then its gone.

people be like "oo but im translating the text" mf'er its not the davinci code is it? give me a break.

go up to a well and its like 0386ut[qeuogh-9aeuhgb-ad9r7gb? [Ok?]

im just like (Saitama: Ok)

Walking around blind because everything is in gibberish, what kind of game makes to decode its own UI text.. wtf. I cba with that..

I can totally understand that it's annoying that even item descriptions don't fill in or translate even after using an item or finding out what it does. On the other hand, for some people it's going to tap into memories of playing random ROMs or copies of games without any kind of translation patch. What's this blue fruit do? I have no idea, but I'm going to try and figure it out and remember it for later.

Part of the charm for me was finding out exactly what to do at the Wells. The game didn't really tell you, but it seems like a natural fit, and then it worked. Lots of things are just intuited or figured out live instead of the game telling you.

I came into the game not knowing anything about it. I was expecting the text to translate at some point but it never did. And you know what, I found it absolutely enrapturing. I found myself paying attention to little clues I found in the manual on every page I discovered. And I did so without the game prompting me. It really is a pretty ingenious mechanic.

My take on the reason WHY you don't understand the language at this point is that your character isn't from this world (isekai meaybe?), that the manual is created for you by your characters former living self and certain words your former living self managed to translate are legible. It would also explain some of the notes and handwriting found in the manual as well maybe. Anyway, I find the game's foreign language a huge bonus to you paying attention to the puzzles far more effectively, actually.

i understood that coins go in the wells just because I know the trope of coins being lucky if you put them in a well. though whether they are supposed to go in the wells or if the game just lets you do that to deceive you... *big shrug* i got an acheivement i guess but still dont feel like im accomplishing anything im just brute forcing the game.

Like in Transformers when the decepticons speak cybertronian, you see the weird symbols on screen as the subtitles but it immediately blends over them in a subtitle you understand so you know what is actually going on.

The foreign language is fine I just dont think i should be made to decode it as the player,.

I dunno, thats my rant over I guess, other people seem to like it so whatevs... I just dont feel like it adds anything by making the game feel 3x more impenetrable and pretentious than it needs to be.

You don't have to try and decode it, it's not as though it was there by accident. It's made with the expectation that you aren't going to know what it means. Experimentation is key, emulating that age-old tidbit of figuring out what things do without being told to you. Sure you might see the icon, read the name, but not be exactly sure what it does... so let's make it a goal to dive in head first and find out!

It's very reminiscent of nostalgic retro gaming. I grew up on the ancient stuff, so it appeals to me. People that are used to being hand-held in video games I imagine do not like it.

I don't think it's a matter of needing to be hand-held. There are plenty of classic games and RPGs that don't reveal what something does until you use/eat/drink it, then it fills in for you. It isn't unreasonable to at least want your items to do that. That said: the manual pages do an excellent job of cluing you in to things and I got a kick out of the timing on some of them.

does your charascter suffer severe short-term memory loss, and have no object permancnece?
the fact you can read and write is because you learned a language, yeah?

so.. does the MC have a learnign disability? I saw a breif smattering of HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER artsy nonsense gibberish text, and sighed. I had no clue this is how deel the rabbit hole goes.

ity's a video game, the fun of a game is just enjoying it, not working on ARG levels of ceaser code dechiphers ( and even then, you have that thing called.. your memory, to let you not have to repeat the same : translating : over and over. )

i cant even play the game bc the controller stops working as soon as i skip the splash screens, ( im on game pass )
and im sorta drfiting here, looking to see if anyone else had this isse; and i see this post.

whew.

I do have to say I would have liked if it was like FEZ, where you actually find out what all of the signs mean and you kind of start learning to read the texts to solve the endgame puzzles. If that alone was a thing I would no doubt put this game on Game Of The Year 2022 (Eldenwho?) cause that made FEZ one of my best experiences with indie games to this day.

Personally, I'm super happy with the language used in this game and how so much is obscured. A lot of basic mechanics are not explained for a long time and when (if?) you find out about them later and it flips your world upside-down, it's such a total joy. I love to explore not just the game world but also its mechanics, how things work, etc. If I was able to simply learn what things do, especially as soon as I got them, frankly the game becomes a lot more mundane.

There are annoyances, like not knowing whether I'll be getting 'permanent' consumables of any type aside from the basic bomb if I use enough of them, but the way things are handled gives this game a really oldschool sensibility to the way you uncover its ins and outs (without a fraction as much frustration/inconvenience when you get things wrong). It's just an extra layer on the whole mysterious vibe that I think fits super well, and I've yet to find a situation where it truly felt too punishing when I experimented to my own detriment.

The game begs you to be curious and step outside of what you know. It's maybe not everyone's favorite thing but I really dig it. The whole thing is pretty approachable without getting too in the weeds with those unexplained mechanics so I don't think you're missing too much if you just want to play and not go full-on Saturday Morning Detective mode.

While not necessary to complete the story, the text can be deciphered!

Someone has already made a guide on how to translate letters.

Ok, good enough for me. I will try and figure it out on my own then, thanks <3

I only wished that map you found updated with the stuff you found like your character scribbling on it to make his own guide. Shop locations, chest locations etc etc he found and saw etc and places he hasnt yet visited could be different colorish so its a visual que that you havent been there yet due to lacking power or abilities or whatever etc. or let us add our own notes

Shop locations are already marked on the map. There's a clue in the manual, as usual. Check the location of the first shop and see if you notice anything.

I'm talking about the windmill on the overworld map. There's a pair of blue eyes in the doorway. You'll find it on the other maps too, that's where the shops are.

It's trash. It's better in a game where it's part of the background and not something you need to actually work with. It's even worse if it doesn't have a way to automatically substitute the letters for real english letters. Nobody here is getting my money for this, and it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up to do this kind of ♥♥♥♥ if people can't memorize new arbitrary alphabets. Even other games where it's totally optional know better than to do things like this with their fake letters.
