AL Dialogue Translation?
I recently bought the AL captains (I'm a weak, weak man) and am enjoying hearing the different captain voices. However, not speaking Japanese, I have absolutely no idea what they are saying. Does anyone have a translation of the different captain dialogues or know where I can find one?

Thanks!

I don't know of one, and a quick, cursory, google search doesn't bring up promising results.

I'd be down to throw together a translation if we had transcripts. As it is now, I still haven't heard all the voice lines, since different things trigger them.

For example, Enterprise has one along the lines of "So we're the last ones left, huh? ... But I have no intention of backing down!" that only triggers when literally all of your allies are destroyed.

I think I've only ever heard it once. It actually did a lot to make me feel less frustrated with the situation (which is why it sticks out in my mind). Yui Ishikawa's (YoRHa 2B, for those of you unfamiliar) tone is rather soothing.

I've also never fired torpedoes with some characters, so I've never heard their associated lines with launching and torpedo hits. There's also lines for your planes taking fire as a carrier, and I've pretty much heard none of those.

Also, chat communication messages with callouts have more than one line associated with them, and I probably only hear the ones for " Fair winds and following seas!" and "Thank you!" 99% of the time.

I also don't really remember lines word-for-word, and am not exactly writing them down when I hear them.

Also, I don't have Azuma (yet), and don't use Nelson or Prinz Eugen at the moment.

I'll try throwing together some of the ones I remember after work or something I guess.

Alright, so some groundwork:

There's some common words and phrases used by all captains.

Zenpou - Front
Kouhou - Back
Ushiro - Behind
Migi gen - Right (side of the ship)
Hidari gen - Left (side of the ship).

Gyorai - torpedo
Raigeki - topedo attack
Raiseki - (also torpedo???) Having a hard time finding a definitive definition of this, but it's definitely referring to torpedoes. Not sure what kanji the "seki" is though.

You'll hear a lot of "______ kara gyorai ga kiteiru" or something along those lines. Characters say this differently, but I'm not about to translate nuances of their speech patterns here. Basically it's "torpedoes are incoming from ________ direction"

Junyoukan - Cruiser
Senkan - Battleship
Kuchikukan - Destroyer
Kuubo - Carrier

You'll hear a lot of "teki _____ hakken", which just means "enemy _____ spotted". Again, not doing this on a per character basis.

Also, general lines include:

"Sentouki, hakkan!" - "Fighter, launch!"

"Shuhou hassha!" - "Main battery, fire!"

"Gyorai hassha!" - "Torpedoes, fire!"

"Meichuu" - "Direct hit"

Anyway, onto some of more specific lines I somewhat remember.

Battle start
  • Atago - "Hajimaru wa yo, Shikikan. Warui ko o korashime ikimasho." - "It's beginning, Commander. Let's go punish some bad children."

  • Azuma - "Kyou no shigoto o hajimemasho. Daijoubu. Watashi wa zutto anata no soba ni imasu kara" - "Let's begin today's work. It'll be alright, for I am always at your side."
  • Azuma - "Watashi wa kantai shiki o? Kekka wa houshou dekinai kedo, ganbarimasu!" - "I'm assuming fleet command? I can't guarantee the outcome, but I'll do my best! "

  • Belfast - "Aruji no tame, shouri o torinozoku no wa, maid no tsutome desu. Soredewa, Belfast, marimasu." - "It's the duty of a maid to grasp victory for her master. Well then, Belfast, heading forth."

  • Dunkerque - "Shouri no maeiwai ni, keeki o yaitekita wa. Shikikan, o tabe ni naru kashira?" - "In preperation for our victory party, I've baked a cake. Commander, will you be having any?"
  • Dunkerque - "Junyou senkan Dunkerque, goaisatsu moushiagemasu. Anata gata ni, ooinaru tsuchi to seirei no shukufuku ga arau koto o" - "Battlecruiser, Dunkerque, introducing myself. May great blessings of the earth and spirits be upon all of you." - missing a word from this line.
  • Dunkerque - "Sentou haichi yo. Tekagen nante kitae shinaide choudai." - "Deploying into battle. Please don't expect anything like mercy." - I'm pretty sure I don't remember this like accurately, but it's something like this. I'll fix it later... probably.

  • Enterprise - "Kono Grey Ghost no imyou wa date janai koto o misete yaru. Shikikan, issho ni tatakaou!" - "I'll show you this Grey Ghost nickname isn't just for show. Commander, let us battle together!"
  • Enterprise - "Shikikan, anata ga ireba kono me ni aru chikiara o saidaigen ni hakki o shinjiteru. Saa, issho ni kono tatakai o owarasemasho!" - "Commander, with you here I'm sure that I can display the maximum power held within me. Now, let us end this battle together!" -Super gonna need to double check this one, but this is the gist.

  • Hipper - "Nani bossatoshite iru no? Shikikan. Sassato sentou ni iku wa yo." - "What're you doing spacing out commander? Let's get headed into battle already."
  • Hipper - "Haaa? Shikikikan, Tsuitekuru no? Ashi de matoi ni suru yo!" - "Huuh? Commander, you're coming with me? You'll get in the way!"

  • Kaga - "Senjou ni ikinokoru no wa tsuyoki mono dake. Koko ni watashi o manzoku saseru teki wa iru no ka?" - "Only the strong survive the battlefield. Is there any enemy here that can satisfy me?"
  • Kaga - "Sentou kaishi da. Saa, waruagaki de kono watashi o tanoshimasero! fufu" - "Commencing combat. Now, amuse me with your pointless struggling! hehe"

  • Montpelier - Kaijou no kishi, Cleveland-aniki no imouto, Montpelier, ikuzo." - "Knight of the sea, big-bro Cleveland's little sister, Montpelier, heading out."

  • Nelson - "Hora, shakitto shinasai yo! Sentou wa hajimaru wa yo." - "Hey, at attention! The battle is starting!" - Didn't hear the last half that well because some one played a radio message.

  • Yukikaze - "Nani ga atte mo ikinobiru. Sore wa kono Yukikze-sama nano da." - "Survival no matter what happens. That is this Yukikaze-sama."
  • "Fuun fuun fuun ♪. Zeiin kono idai na Yukikaze-sama o tsuite kuru no da." - "Hmm hmm hmm ♪. All units, follow this magnificent Yukikaze-sama."
  • Yukikize - "Sentou kaishi! Watashi no kouun o hariaitai yatsu wa kakatte kuru no da!" - "Battle start! Those who wish to challenge my fortune, come at me!"
Torpedoes incoming
  • Enterprise - "Kawasu zo!" - "We're evading!"
  • Enterprise - "Kaihi suru!" - "We're evading!" - different words, same meaning. I might consider alternate translations that use synonyms later.

  • Hipper - "Shield tenkai! Te- nande shield nai no yo?!" - "Raise the shields! Wha- Why don't we have shields?!" - This is a reference to one of her skills in Azur Lane, which allows her to activate rotating defensive shields. These actually only work on cannon fire, so the line, while funny, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I still like it though.
  • Hipper - "Kore gurai kaihi dekiru desho?!" - "You can evade at least this much, right?!"

  • Yukikaze - "Yukikaze-sama no kouun nara, atranai hazu da" - "With Yukikaze-sama's fortune, they shouldn't hit"
  • Yukikaze - "Shikikan! Nantoka suru no da!" - "Commander! Do something!"
  • Yukikize - "Kowai kara, kaihi suru no da!" - "It's scary, so we're evading!"
Setting a smoke screen
  • Nelson - "Enmaku o tenkai suru wa." - "Raising a smoke screen."
Engine boost complete
  • Yukikaze - "Engine boost kaijo? Motto asobitakatta noni..." - "Engine boost over? I wanted to play more though..."
Using an AA consumable
  • Enterprise - "Taikuu sentou youi!" - "Prepare for anti-air combat!"
When you're lit on fire
  • Atago - "Kasai hassei. Daijoubu? Shouka dekiru?" - "Fire has broken out. Are you alright? Can we douse it?"

  • Cleveland - "Achichichichi! Moeteru moeteru!" - "Hot hot hot hot! We're burning, we're burning!"

  • Kaga- "Kasai hassei. Kono teki, yaru janai" - "Fire has broken out. This enemy's not bad."

  • Yukikaze - "Moeteru no da! Atsui no da!" - "We're burning! It's hot!"
When you begin flooding
  • Enterprise - "Shinsui hassei. Damage control!" - "We've begun flooding. Damage control!"
When your main turret is damaged
  • Yukikaze - "Shuhou wa sonshou nano da..." - "Our main cannon has been damaged..." - gonna have to check this one. Might take a long time since main cannon disables aren't exactly super common.
Damage control finished
  • Kaga - "Taiou kanryou. Kono itami, juubai ni shi.te kaisu!" - "Completed countermeasures. This pain, I'll return it tenfold!" - there's no period in that one word in Japanese. That's just me getting around Steam having an overactive censor that's censoring a totally common, normal, word.

  • Yukikaze - "Naota no da! Sentou ni modoru no da." - "It's fixed! Returning to battle."
When you're ahead
  • Dunkerque - "Shouri mokuzen yo! Daga, ki o yurumenaide!" - "Victory is within our grasp! However, do not lose focus!"

  • Enterprise - "Atashi tachi wa yuusei da. Saa, zenryoku de osu zo!" - "We're ahead. Now, let's push with everything we've got!"

  • Hipper - "Atashi tachi wa yuusen yo. Dakara te, yudan suru janai wa yo!" - "We're ahead. But that doesn't mean you should let your guard down!"
  • Hipper- "Shouri mokuzen ne. Sassato owaseru wa yo!" - "Victory is within our grasp. Let's get this over with!"

  • Kaga - "Shouri mokuzen yo. Demo, saigo made te o nukanai." - "Victory is within our grasp, but I won't let up until the end."

  • Montpelier - "Kan ga moeteiru. Sassa to shouka shi.te kure." - "The ship is burning. Please hurry up and extinguish it."

  • Yukikaze - "Mikata wa yuusei nano da. Yukikaze no kouun no okage nanoda!" - "Allied forces are ahead. It's thanks to Yukikaze's fortune!" - I'm only kind of remembering this one. It's probably slightly off.
  • Yukikaze - "Mou shori wa mokusen nano da! Kouun? Iya. Jitsuryoku nano da!" - "Victory already lies just before us! Fortune? No. Skill!"
When you're behind
  • Dunkerque - "Teki wa yuusen ne. Kore kara wa honban yo." - "The enemy is ahead. This is where the real thing starts. "
When you do simultaneous fire
  • Enterprise - "Owari da!" - "It's over!" - this is the line she uses for skill activation in Azur Lane.

  • Hipper - "Feuer!" - just to note that it's not technically "fire!"

  • Kaga - "Shuhou, hikisage!" - "Main cannon, wither!" - super not sure about this one.
  • Kaga - "Shizume!" - "Sink!"

  • Montpelier - "Mezawari. Kiero." - "You're an eyesore. Disappear."
  • Montpelier - "Kougeki kaishi." - "Commence attack."

  • Yukikaze - "Uchimakuru no da!" - "Fire everything!"
When you launch torpedoes
  • Yukikaze - "Tekito ni utte mo kitto ataru no da. ♪" - "Even if we fire carelessly we'll definitely hit. ♪"
When you score a torpedo hit
  • Enterprise - "fuu - raigeki ni mo mada narenai na" - "whew - I'm still not used to torpedoes"
When you destroy an enemy
  • Atago - "Teki ____ gekichin. Yaru janai!" - "Enemy ____ sunk. Not bad!"

  • Azuma - "Teki ____ gekichin. Omigoto desu" - "Enemy ____ sunk. Splendid."
  • Azuma - "Teki ____ gekichin. Tanren no seika desu ne" - ""Enemy ____ sunk. It would seem this is a result of our training."

  • Hipper - "Teki ____ gekichin? Douse magure desho." - "Enemy ____ sunk? It's probably just a fluke."

  • Kaga - "Teki ____ gekichin. Ii choushi da." - "Enemy ____ sunk. We're doing well."
Victory
  • Atago - "Yatta janai! Onee-san gohoubi o agechau kashira?" - "We did it! Shall big sis give you a reward?"

  • Avrora - "Shouri wa warera no te ni!" - "Victory is in our grasp!"

  • Azuma - "Minna de ganbatta kekka yo! Watashi wa sono naka no hitori de shika nai wa." - "This is the result of everyone's hard work! I'm only a single piece of that."

  • Belfast "Ara, daidokoro o yogore yori mo, tegotai arimasen ne." - "Oh, they were easier to mop up than kitchen dirt." - I went ahead and pulled this translation from the Azur Lane wiki for consistency. This is literally the line Belfast says when she's MVP at the end of a battle in AL.

  • Dunkerque- "Katta wa. Fuu. Modottara okashi no shouzai o kaidashi ni tsukiatte moraenai?" - "We won. Whew. When we get back, will you go shopping for sweets with me?"

  • Hipper - "K-katta no? M-maa, anta ni shi.te wa joudeki janai?" - "W-we won? W-well, I guess that's pretty good for you." - again with that overactive Steam censor.

  • Kaga - "Tanoshii senka kakunin no jikan da. Omoikiri tanoshinde kure" - "It's time for the fun task of confirming the fruits of battle. Please enjoy yourself as much as you can."

  • Montpelier - "Shouri o nankai keiken shi.te mo, warukunai mono da." - "No matter how many times I experience victory, it's not bad."

  • Nelson - "Royal Navy no eishi mita ka?!" - "Did you witness the brilliance of the Royal Navy?!"

  • Yukikaze - "Kore ga Yukikaze no jitsuryoku nano da!" - "This is Yukikaze's skill!"
Defeat
  • Dunkerque - "Haiboku nado, owari o imi suru janai wa." - "Defeat doesn't mean the end."

  • Yukikaze - "Yukikaze no haiboku nante... Nanika okashii no da!" - "For Yukikaze-sama to be defeated... Something is strange!"
Turning on auto pilot
  • Cleveland - "Jidou koukou ni kirikaeru zo" - "Switching to automatic sailing"

  • Kaga - "Jidou koukou ni kirikaeru. Watashi ni makasete oke" - "Switching to automatic sailing. Leave it to me."

  • Yukikaze - "Jidou koukou ni kirikaetta no da. Kono Yukikaze-sama ni makaseru no da." - "Switching to automatic sailing. Leave it up to Yukikaze-sama."
Turning off auto pilot
  • Hipper - "Fuu, tsukareta. Hora, soukan mororu wa yo" - "Urh, I'm tired. Hey, I'm returning control." - Don't rely on this one for accuracy. I either don't know (and can't find), or am not correctly hearing the underlined word.

  • Kaga- "Soukan o shikikan ni modosu. Buzama na ugoki o suruna yo" - "Returning control to you commander. Don't make any shameful moves."

  • Yukikaze - "Shikikan ni soukan o modosu no da" - "Returning control to you commander."
"Thanks!" in chat
  • Cleveland - "Taskeru gawa ni natteta ne. Arigato!" - "I've end up being saved. Thanks!"
"Well done!" in chat
  • Enterprise - "Tatakai no ato no tatakai, ka..." - "One battle after another, huh" - Also pulled from the Azur Lane wiki. This is Enterprise's line when you return from battle and she's marked as your secretary ship.
"Concentrate fire!" in chat
  • Dunkerque - "Zenkan! Mokuhyou ni kougeki o shuuchu suru wa yo" - "All ships! We're concentrating attacks on the target!"
"Get back" in chat
  • Dunkerque - "Soko no fune! Modoru wa yo!" - "That ship! Get back!"
"Requesting support!" in chat
  • Cleveland - "Shien hougeki o tanomu!" - "Supporting shelling requested!"

There's obviously a WHOLE LOT I'm missing here. I'll try updating it over time I guess. Could compile it into a guide with better formatting later I guess, but it's way too incomplete for that right now.

Wow, I would have thought there'd be a list put out by wargaming or something. I greatly appreciate the translations, they should prove very helpful! At least I should have some idea of what they are saying now, even if I miss a lot of the character specific refrences and personality.

I'd definetly be interested in seeing more if you have the time, though I realize it's a lot of work so I completely understand if you'd rather not.

Thanks again!

Added some lines for Kaga and Hipper. Also added one line for Enterprise that I think I remember.

This'll be a work in progress as I go. I'll just grind out some boxes over time while adding lines here. Mostly in PvE so I don't become a drag on my team shift-tabbing out between action on occasion.

I'll post short change notes like this when I'm done for a session.

What about Nelson? What exactly does she say when you launch a torpedo?

Don't know. I haven't been using her.

I'll either check after work, or you can try seeing if you can manage to write out her line accurately enough that I can translate it. Even I have trouble properly hearing lines at times though, so that may be a tall ask if you're not at least slightly familiar with the language. Maybe not though.

She screams something like "atare!" every time a torpedo is released. Quite anoying when launching them individually...

There's no good sounding English direct translation of that.

It literally means "Hit!".

Like calling out a wish or demand for your aim to be true.

Interesting, I imagine this sounds better in Japanese, or is it odd there too?

Japanese isn't exactly my first language, so I'm not the best person to ask.

I think it sounds fine though. What makes it so awkward in English is the redundancy. The subject has already been established as fire, so specifying the type of fighting within the space of a few words of mentioning fire sounds odd. In Japanese, the words are different enough that it just seems natural. Plus, I'm pretty sure it's just a case of literally using the right word for the right situation in Japanese. I guess I could have translated it as "douse"... actually I think I'll do that.

Actually, by a similar token, I didn't mention this, but "hakkan" for "launching" is actually also an incredibly specific word. It actually specifically means "airplane taking off from a warship". It combines the kanji for "hasshin" which is a far more general word for takeoff, and the "kan" from "senkan", "kuchikukan", "junyoukan", "kantai", etc. That said, having a two word phrase and translating it into "fighter, launching from warship", sounds both overly wordy and needlessly specific due to the obvious context. That's the only use of the word in Japanese though, so it pretty clearly doesn't seem needlessly specific.

*also I fixed a couple formatting errors I apparently made.
