You could also play PvE Scenarios where everyone works together to complete an operation; they grant a lot of rewards, too
If winning or farming shell hits makes makes the game enjoyable, you gotta improve first. Same applies to Scenarios but to a lesser extent.
If you're interested, this community contributor makes a ton of video guides and tutorials:

randoms are "balanced" in a way that there are some tryhards but a lot of vegetables too.
Now OP. Here's the sad truth. This game is fun but its has a massive skill wall that I belive you have run into. When you first start off your in portected match making thats easy and allow you to grind the game quickly and teaches you the basics. How ever once your reach tier 5 and 250 games the guide rails come off for pvp and your thrown into the general player pool with everything form pros to other noobs. This is the make or break point in the game. IF you can accept that learning in this game means dieing first. Are willing too spectate the entire match even after dying first to learn about the game. Are willing to ask questions on this forum and watch youtubers who cover this game then you can get past the hump and I promise you it will become fun. How ever the learning proccess isn't fun it hard its frustrating but it worth it. Because if you can learn the game and master it it is unbaleivably fun. Now the choice si up to you. You can choose to play coop and grind ships slowly and painfully or you can try, fail, learn and progress in pvp to a point where it is fun. Now this may sound terrible but it doesnt have to be. On this journey you can play with friends and clan mates to make it more fun. Just look for a clan that you have friends in. Look for a noob clan or try hitting the looking for division button. For me the looking for division button brought me a small clan of active memembers who I play almost daily with and get a whole lot of fun out of.
I hope this is helpful and good luck.
I've never heard good things about War thunder's naval game mode, but haven't tried it myself.
As for fun in randoms:
You can find better players to play with and help teach you. This gives you a slight distraction from the crap people in the game will throw at you. Try to ignore it.
It's also important to try to look at what you did well even if it is a silver lining. Did you some how drag an enemy all the way across the map because they wanted to kill you? Good, it's a good thing they wasted time and effort to try and knock you out.
Did you kill someone, (Even if it might be a kill steal) Well at least you took someone out with you. Or at least they didn't escape, heal and manage to contribute anymore to their team's victory.
It's important to focus on what you're doing well, it's important to see how you can get better, even if you have to force yourself to remember these things. And honestly sometimes people get toxic in chat because they want you to play their way, even if it is horrible advice.
Try to be positive and if you feel the games aren't going your way then maybe take a break.
Recently I'll sprinkle a few bot games in (mostly to farm directives) Which makes you feel like you're winning more.
Oh try to remember ships you have a super fun time in or can carry in and sprinkle those in somewhere.
but as someone who managed to brake into destroyers(little known fact the maps barely work at cruiser tier.) i will say this it is a much sweatier experiance where you will spend more time getting attacked by naval bombers that can one shot you torpedo boat arse it gets better when you finally have a good line up but some factions have an utter trash line up until 3-4 unlocks in (the british line is 3 before you get a competative ship and you only have that one per match)
but pretty much what this man has said
PvP was daunting and had limited success. Coulnd´t land good salvos, sailing into bad positions and getting nuked from matches, didnt feel like I had any impact on the match besides being a good target for enemys to farm some damage.
I tried to get better in matches against bots but that wasnt really helpful since bots only one strat and one start only: Rushing strait to the bottom of the ocean.
I think it is crucial to understand some basic concepts and mechanics to be able to make your time in the game fun but you dont need to invest hours of research.
There are plenty of sources to broaden your horizon.
as far as i'm concerned it doesn't work that way, it has everything to do with sigma, i've been hitting russian ships on their broadside and didn't get any citadels, 1 of them got me a citadel on an ANGLE. it's total BS. doesn't matter how good you are, the sigma will always disperse your shots unless you're in the game maker's OP ships (whichever they might be!!!)
i'm so frustrated by the total unreliability of the mechanics that i actually can't wait for my premium to expire. i just wished they gave everyone the same sigma, then it would be a fair game
