they fire from alone when aircraft are close enough you can disabel them with P
I was under the impression that they fire automatically since you can press a key to disable them (I think it was P or Shift+P or something like that, which you can press to disable the AA and secondary guns)

/Edit/ someone was quicker xD

When multiple squadrons are over your head, select one by clicking Ctrl+click on squadron. It will focus all the AA on that one squadron for more efficiency. Also, clicking Ctrl+a ship or a planes squadron will determine if you want your dual purpose secondaries to focus on either one of those.

The AA section on the wiki does a good job explaining it check it out here http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Aerial_Combat

Bob, when you say your dual purpose secondaries are you speaking about the guns mounted on the side of the ship rather than those sitting on the deck of the battleship? I noticed and wonder about these small guns located and pointing out of the sides.

For the most part they are auto fire when the aircraft get into range, But you can focus or tell the guns to focus on a target (Hold CTRL and left click on target)

You can also toggle them off (think Default is P) inorder to stay hidden in smoke and if your just out of their view range.

There are secondaries that also work as AA guns, basically CTRL+Click for a priority target

Some of the secondary guns on a ship, usually the biggest of them... 100mm 120-130-150mm etc, mounted usually on the side of the ship's deck, are dual-purpose, which means they will fire at enemy planes, or enemy ships within their range. But by Ctrl+clicking the target (either planes or ships) you decide on what they should focus.

You can tell which one they are and see them in the port, when you hover your mouse over and click on the secondary guns on the right pannel "artillery". Then, if you see the same guns on the "AA defense" tab, then you know they are dual-purpose

Hope it helps.

You have to know the fire range of your ship's AA guns, also as it's said in other comments you can prioritize targets by alt+clicking on them, but to make it really effective you have to choose the "manual AA" captain skill (it's level 4 i think)

It all depends on the ships. That captain skill only apply for some gun calibers... above 80mm I believe or so. So it's better to check before if your ship has those particular guns, and if they are worth the 4 pts captain skills imho.

Selecting one target with Ctrl+LMB also increases damage per minute of your AAA by 10%.
