This Reddit even says the same thing i just said to prove it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/6scs1f/is_there_a_list_of_steam_games_that_have_ps4/
Also that Reddit post is talking about Steam Link which is a whole different ballgame. And as long as the game supports a controller hell even some that dont i havent had any issues using a PS4 controller on steam for. But honestly this is all kinda pointless since everyone that posted on here besides us two has already refunded lol.
if you read one of my replies, I said i even sold my ps4 remote and got a steam remote. Still would not work.
First: Put in your PS4-Controller
2. Start the Big Picture-Mode (top-right)
3. Start the Game (in Big Picture Mode)
4. Go in the options ingame an switch to "Controller"
Now you can play with the PS4 Controller.
If you want play over your TV Screen, go into the Windows options (Display) and choose "Duplicate display", only then you can play in the "Big Picture Mode" on your TV Screen.
But my Xb1 controller have a terrible issue that makes it often disconnect from the PC, making it unusable. :(

The ps4 controller is a direct input devices and not all games support that. You can use software to make it mimic a 360pad which are xinput. You can use steam input or something like DS4Windows.

If you go the in steam route you need to go in the options and enable steam to take over your ps4 controller when running games thru steam. Then make sure when you launch a game it is mapping the buttons to match a 360 pads layout, which is the default.
This is nice because the game does not support remapping buttons you can do it thru the steam input ui. Or if a game only supports a keyboard you can controller inputs to keyboard presses.
I have a complex custom remapping for when I fell like playing final fantasy xi. Because the default in game controller bindings suck, so I have the controller mimic the keyboard. I got it setup so when i hold down things like R2/L2 it will swap bindings for other buttons among other things.
When it comes to controller support being messy you can blame microsoft. Directinput was more open but limited because of how old it was. Instead of expanding and making a more up to date version they made xinput with only the xbox controller in mind and using windows to force everyone to use it. Steam input is a good idea but to get more games to natively support it they need to make standlone version of it and devs and ship with their game and not require steam.
