sexist portrayal of main characters?
i want to know why they made the guy dumb and foolish while making the girl smart and serious. is this a fair thing for square enix to do? favoring one gender and making them seem superior over the other.

It's a Japanese tradition for when they're trying to make something comedic.
There's supposed to be a "straight man" and then the character who is the joke.

It's like how western comedy used to have laugh tracks and they play the laugh track to let you know when a joke is told and you're supposed to laugh. Japan instead has it where the straight man points out every moment something "funny" happens, to let the viewer know a joke was told.

The twist is actually that a woman is playing as the straight man this time. Goes over westerners heads apparently. Go watch any comedy series by Japan and you will see the straight man in action with the "idiots" doing the jokes.

you know, you never really understand just how unfunny and lame this form of comedy truly is until you've heard it without the canned laughter. take that away and this form of comedy will fall fat instantly.

take this youtube video showing a portion of an episode of Friends without the canned laughter for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BFSZ8XzWOM

it's REALLY cringy and not at all funny without that canned laughter propping it up.

without this one aspect helping, i was also greatly put off by this games...comedy... cause it's simply not funny and really does feel quite sexist. i mean, all throughout the game Lann is made a fool of, picked on, mocked, and ridiculed while Reynn is pretty much the opposite. barring the few exceptions where she's simply annoying (her dumb habit of spouting random trivia when upset) or acting...weird (the whole chasing the cactuar conductor thing which would be a far more fitting situation in an anime or much more fitting video game).

it CAN be seen as funny but it's also very easy to take it the wrong way and see it as a bit of an abusive relationship in some ways. maybe if it was 2 dudes it would work better and wouldn't feel sexist but since it's a male and a female it just doesn't work as intended overall.

As far as the character of both of the twins is concerned personally I will take their current portrayal post-amnesia over the obnoxious immature and irresponsible jerks we see in the flashback scenes that they were pre-amnesia (whole game with those two brats on a power trip (even if their intent was kinda good) would be nigh on unplayable).

Also, Lann isn't as stupid as the game makes him out to be at first glance, in several points he riffs on his own stupidity and adding to that the few fourth wall breaking nods from him, to me he comes of as less stupid or dumb than just childlike goofiness (sure he is the less mature of the two, obviously hence childlike, but he also has his moment of surprising maturity, eventually).

He owns his own dumbness even embelishes it at times, although this isn't entirely consistent. But, like someone mentioned this is based on a form of Japanese comedy so it not being all entirely geniune makes sense. Also, while I think the localization did a good job most of the time translating comedy (especially something based on a format, as noted) is not easy. While this is just my opinion on it, I think at times the localization makes Lann a bit more stupid than the source material.

As for their use of gender stereotypes, if I had to guess the reason we have two main characters of different genders is an attempt to appeal to both genders of players. The reliance on the trope of studious and smart girl and the goofy, and dumb, boy is probably to save on exposition, and as such voice acting costs, because with these two tropey archetypes they don't need to spend as much time establishing their characters (it is a trope for a reason).

Personally I don't consider this kind of use of gender stereotypes sexists at all, because of context and style, plus there is no discriminatory intent on the authors part or at least I find it highly unlikely.

I don't mind that.

I'm a grown up man, but i enjoy playing Reynn as my main character. And i still love Lann's funny moments.

As people already said, it's the Classic Japanese Humor Theather, Manzai.
Where there's the Smart man and Funny man, when Funny man does something stupid, and Smart man provides a reaction.

It's often used in a lot of Anime, like One Piece.

Let me make an example of this joke, that would happen in WoFF...

Lann: Those werebats... if i get bitten by the one, would i become a baseball pro?
Reynn: It's not that kind of Bat!

I also remember a similar joke in Sonic Heroes:
Charmy: Mmm... Chips, i love potato chips.
Vector: Not that kind of chips, were in casino!

I love this kind of humor, it always provides me a good laugh and it's simple to understand.
I love reaction-based humor.

JaPaN. It happens far too often in anime and the niche fanservicey JRPGs too.

yes it pains me to say but he is a terribly written character. im so used to the male main characters of FF being the quiet/loner/edgy type, and although Tidus from FFX was the first one for me that was goofy/silly/immature, he was written and portrayed so well that it made him enduring and likeable. meanwhile Lann just has no redeemable aspects to him or is put in situations where you can actually understand him/ relate to him or feel sorry for him. hes just annoying and immature in the worst ways possible.

Maybe it's because Lann is not the main character when he's alone?

Lann and Reynn are both the main character, you must consider them both as a whole.

And Lann is not horrible, especially what he did in the false ending was pretty brave.

no the main character is whichever you choose to play. im pretty sure they made it so that girls can have a female lead to play as, and the guys can have a male to play as.

i wouldnt say that the ending for lann makes up for him being incredibly annoying within the first hour of gameplay (how much ive played so far) and probably all throughout the game. I thought Tidus was semi arrogant and immature but his life was flipped upside down within the first 30 minutes or so and he became more grounded in reality afterwards although he still kept his silly but optomistic outlook on things

Come on, Lann is funny. I love his antics.

Lann and Reynn are basically like Pinky and the Brain.

Lan was never annoying to me, as i always found his stupidity fun.

And... wait... what did you say?
"im pretty sure they made it so that girls can have a female lead to play as"
My mom is a girl, but she always prefers to play as males in videogames. (She currently is playing AC: Origins)
While i am male i prefer to play as females.

Seriously, why do people think that females want to play as females?

ok well you just proved that having a choice at playing a female and/or male main character is the whole point of having them in the game. one or both for each gender player to choose

i just think they went overboard with his stupidity. he can be funny at times but thats exactly how they should have kept it (minimal). its like he uses every single oppurtinity to make a joke about how dumb he is, even when theres no joke to be made. i thought he was funny for the first 15 minutes or so but thats about it.

I dunno, i like him more and more with each of his dumb joke.

You're just trying to be too smart, that's why you don't enjoy him.
You just need to get with the flow.
If the game provides you the dumb humor, then go with the flow and pretend like you enjoy it, that's what i do ^_^

The writing style is based around the concept of a double act, so there is no single lead, because neither character could carry the chosen style or narrative alone. Although, the coupling of the twins goes way deeper in terms of narrative than just the hit or miss comedy, they are quite literally two halves of the same power.

Also, it is important to note, since you compare Lann to Tidus, there is an age difference the twins are 15, Tidus was 17. If I am not mistaken that is among the youngest FF protagonists ever (only the Brave Exvius character is 14 afaik, Rikku ties in at 15 but she is not a protagonist). Also Tidus was a professional athlete that means he is used to high pressure situations but he also had to deal with a loss previously.

Lann and Reynn by comparison are sheltered brats who for all we know were just messing around (the most apt description without going into massive spoilers) few days prior ending up essentially sleeping for at least a century and finding large piece of who they used to be as people missing because any memory of Grymoire was, for all intents and purposes (that's what "god" told them), permanently lost.

At the end of the day Lann is supposed to be annoying anyways, if he wasn't there would be nothing for Reynn (and at times Tama) to play off of. But that isn't what defines him. He is supposed to be Reynn's exact opposite while Reynn is deliberately his opposite. However, this mirroring is also imperfect by design in few areas (Reynn and Ghosts, Lann and his sense of responsibility)

Indeed.
While Lann is very easygoing, Reynn can be very grudgesome (As seen with Cactuar Conductor)

This seems like a very dumb thread to me. Women can be smart, Men can be dumb. Women can also be dumb, and Men can be smart. Why is it sexist to have a cast of characters that contrast each other? Because that's all it really is. Contrast.

Also to say that Women being sexy is misogynist is actually a very misandrist point of view. Women make up their own minds and trying to be sexy is not exclusively just because of men. Never has and never will be.

Yes, yes it is a dumb thread. I want to write so much more and rant about SJWs making everyone's life miserable but I heard you get banned easily if you get into political stuff. Then again, this is a game forum so I can see why one shouldn't.
