Also, Lann isn't as stupid as the game makes him out to be at first glance, in several points he riffs on his own stupidity and adding to that the few fourth wall breaking nods from him, to me he comes of as less stupid or dumb than just childlike goofiness (sure he is the less mature of the two, obviously hence childlike, but he also has his moment of surprising maturity, eventually).
He owns his own dumbness even embelishes it at times, although this isn't entirely consistent. But, like someone mentioned this is based on a form of Japanese comedy so it not being all entirely geniune makes sense. Also, while I think the localization did a good job most of the time translating comedy (especially something based on a format, as noted) is not easy. While this is just my opinion on it, I think at times the localization makes Lann a bit more stupid than the source material.
As for their use of gender stereotypes, if I had to guess the reason we have two main characters of different genders is an attempt to appeal to both genders of players. The reliance on the trope of studious and smart girl and the goofy, and dumb, boy is probably to save on exposition, and as such voice acting costs, because with these two tropey archetypes they don't need to spend as much time establishing their characters (it is a trope for a reason).
Personally I don't consider this kind of use of gender stereotypes sexists at all, because of context and style, plus there is no discriminatory intent on the authors part or at least I find it highly unlikely.
I'm a grown up man, but i enjoy playing Reynn as my main character. And i still love Lann's funny moments.
As people already said, it's the Classic Japanese Humor Theather, Manzai.
Where there's the Smart man and Funny man, when Funny man does something stupid, and Smart man provides a reaction.
It's often used in a lot of Anime, like One Piece.
Let me make an example of this joke, that would happen in WoFF...
Lann: Those werebats... if i get bitten by the one, would i become a baseball pro?
Reynn: It's not that kind of Bat!
I also remember a similar joke in Sonic Heroes:
Charmy: Mmm... Chips, i love potato chips.
Vector: Not that kind of chips, were in casino!
I love this kind of humor, it always provides me a good laugh and it's simple to understand.
I love reaction-based humor.
Agreed...wondering why the poster has so many games with woman in bikinies..
Also has HENTAI in their profile..this person is just looking for attention. Watch them now make their profile private now..lol. Still, ill try to give them the benefit of a doubt since there arguments are logical at least.
Lann and Reynn are both the main character, you must consider them both as a whole.
And Lann is not horrible, especially what he did in the false ending was pretty brave.
i wouldnt say that the ending for lann makes up for him being incredibly annoying within the first hour of gameplay (how much ive played so far) and probably all throughout the game. I thought Tidus was semi arrogant and immature but his life was flipped upside down within the first 30 minutes or so and he became more grounded in reality afterwards although he still kept his silly but optomistic outlook on things
Come on, Lann is funny. I love his antics.
Lann and Reynn are basically like Pinky and the Brain.
Lan was never annoying to me, as i always found his stupidity fun.
And... wait... what did you say?
"im pretty sure they made it so that girls can have a female lead to play as"
My mom is a girl, but she always prefers to play as males in videogames. (She currently is playing AC: Origins)
While i am male i prefer to play as females.
Seriously, why do people think that females want to play as females?
i just think they went overboard with his stupidity. he can be funny at times but thats exactly how they should have kept it (minimal). its like he uses every single oppurtinity to make a joke about how dumb he is, even when theres no joke to be made. i thought he was funny for the first 15 minutes or so but thats about it.
I dunno, i like him more and more with each of his dumb joke.
You're just trying to be too smart, that's why you don't enjoy him.
You just need to get with the flow.
If the game provides you the dumb humor, then go with the flow and pretend like you enjoy it, that's what i do ^_^
The writing style is based around the concept of a double act, so there is no single lead, because neither character could carry the chosen style or narrative alone. Although, the coupling of the twins goes way deeper in terms of narrative than just the hit or miss comedy, they are quite literally two halves of the same power.
Also, it is important to note, since you compare Lann to Tidus, there is an age difference the twins are 15, Tidus was 17. If I am not mistaken that is among the youngest FF protagonists ever (only the Brave Exvius character is 14 afaik, Rikku ties in at 15 but she is not a protagonist). Also Tidus was a professional athlete that means he is used to high pressure situations but he also had to deal with a loss previously.
Lann and Reynn by comparison are sheltered brats who for all we know were just messing around (the most apt description without going into massive spoilers) few days prior ending up essentially sleeping for at least a century and finding large piece of who they used to be as people missing because any memory of Grymoire was, for all intents and purposes (that's what "god" told them), permanently lost.
At the end of the day Lann is supposed to be annoying anyways, if he wasn't there would be nothing for Reynn (and at times Tama) to play off of. But that isn't what defines him. He is supposed to be Reynn's exact opposite while Reynn is deliberately his opposite. However, this mirroring is also imperfect by design in few areas (Reynn and Ghosts, Lann and his sense of responsibility)
While Lann is very easygoing, Reynn can be very grudgesome (As seen with Cactuar Conductor)
Also to say that Women being sexy is misogynist is actually a very misandrist point of view. Women make up their own minds and trying to be sexy is not exclusively just because of men. Never has and never will be.
Yes, yes it is a dumb thread. I want to write so much more and rant about SJWs making everyone's life miserable but I heard you get banned easily if you get into political stuff. Then again, this is a game forum so I can see why one shouldn't.
