I mapped the Dpad to the Keyboard Arrows in the Controller Configuration. However I have yet to find a good solution for the Descend button since the pull back stick has no effect on planes and helicopters as they do not use stick for acceleration but instead rely on A which is Ascend. The problem is that Descend, which should be the B button when in Planes and Helicopters is tied by programming to Crouch. You can map the B button to C on the keyboard in the Controller Configuration and that will give you Descend but you lose menu navigation Back ability and skip ability. So you have to back out of menus by hittting the same button that put you in the main menu or the in game menu.
Its wonky but it solves the problem.
And for the people acting like it isn't an issue, you should try google. Its everywhere. Here, Reddit, tons of forums. It is a widespread issue. Try searching. When someone says they have a problem, you are just cholesterol if your response is there is no issue. It isn't just the Xbox controller. DS4, Shield, generic controllers. It is a programming issue Ubi should probably be aware of by now since they have been getting cursed pretty heavily on their own forums.
At some point, an overly ambitious lawyer will come along and start holding these game companies responsible as it technically falls under bait and switch, etc. Could you imagine buying a car with a radio that had inop buttons? Or maybe headlights that didn't turn on?
i just picked this game up now during the sale, i use ds4 and have this issue... thought i'd search... wow ubisoft, you really Britta'd it again...

if your game is a steam copy you must deal with STEAM big picture mode settings
and set your game pad up accordingly to what STEAM uses as mentioned a few posts up by mike gem
