You're safe up to 95*c but just out of curiosity what cooler are you running? I have a 7950x but I limit the TJMax to 85*c, its not unusual for 7000 series 9000 series Ryzen processors to exceed 90*c stock. If you are still worried remove the cooler reapply tim and make sure you reinstall the cooler properly. I run a Deepcool LS720 360mm AIO and while gaming it usually hovers around the 80*c mark, the processor will throttle clock speed once the TJMax has been hit.
Appreciate the reply! Good to know! My temps are actually pretty good in every other game I have tested. Last of Us Part 1 actually hit 95c which concerned me deeply but turns out it can do this whilst downloading the shader compilation and once that was finished, my temps went back to being very good, so it appears I have installed the cooler correctly but will continue to monitor just in case. :)
Cooler wise I'm running a Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black Dual Radiator and just to also add the case I'm using is the Fractal North XL
I use an NHD15 Chromax on my other system, very good cooler. I didn't much like the idea of my 7950x hitting 95*c either but AMD have said that 95*c is normal, I set my TJMax cap to 85*c, you can do the same if you so wish. One thing that increased my temps was the RTX3090 I had before, I replaced it with a 4080S and my processor temp dropped 5*c. The 3090 was heating up my whole system, it was puling like 450w but this 4080S max is around 250w, my idle temps dropped significantly.
Thanks for the info! I have also read in the past that Ryzen cpus can run with high temps but can be normal depending on which cpu you have. I upgraded from a 5900x and was told the same thing about those cpus too. I may look into the TJMax cap. :)
As for a new gpu, that's looking like a hard pass atm with the crazy prices and the fact the 40 and 50 series are like finite. tariffs are also not helping. I was looking for a more efficient card but I think I''m going to be waiting a while though it's on my list. I'm currently trying out some undervolt profiles, my temps are great but my card still pulls a lot of wattage, though it's not too bad. As as example Cyberpunk tends to roughly fluctuate between 340-380 watts, maybe a little more but the 3080ti is a 450 watt card so I'm good but I'll keep looking for the sweet spot! 250w on a 4080 is awesome
Np. I also have a 3950x (NHD15) it usually tops out at around 80*c during a heavy load and in games in the 70's but if I let my 7950x fly it can hit 95*c without even loading it up. Tbf my 3950x is OC to 4.4ghz 1.3065v still though the 7950x runs way hotter than my 3950x even with a 360mm AIO.
3000 series cards can eat power but so can the 5000 series lol the 5090 can draw above 600w... I agree GPU prices are utterly insane now which is why I picked up a 4080S last year on Black Friday for $1600 here, that same card is now $2000 and the 5080 though not in stock is $2200 for the cheapest card.
Yea give undervolting a try, I could only get -3% on my 7950x on one core with -1% on the other cores so it really wasn't worth the hours of testing. Its a tedious process because one game might be stable then if you load up Davinci Resolve it will crash:( Or even a more CPU intensive game.
I would fiddle with Ram get the timings tighter, better use of your time imo Bro. Its awesome you managed to get a 9800x3D though, out of stock here with people reselling them on second hand sites for $400 over retail haha, even the 7800x3D price went up..
EDIT: after the thermal paste settled my temps actually dropped by about 2c-3c while streaming the last of us part 1 and doing shader compilation I peaked at 62c when stream was off I hit 59c
I've got a 7950x and yea Bro it does get hot but I temp limited it to 85*c TJMax with PBO, I'm considering getting a 9800x3D for my Asrock Taichi Carrara x670 board so I can free up the 7950x and replace my 3950x workstation system. I will be ordering the contact frame, thanks for weighing in mate. Sorry I just saw this.
Goto Control Panel > Power Options, then Change your Plan Settings. In there, Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management, change Max processor state to 99.
This will stop your Processor cores from running in turbo mode. In Far Cry 5, this will give you a 20c drop in CPU temps.
