I do not recall anywhere like in FC4 you had to upgrade inventory carry ability with animal skins, as it is done by spending perk points in FC5.
You also can fish to get moeny, but it is a longer process than hunting.
A video I was watching had a glitch, the wolf got stuck and was yapping but unresponsive to its environment (game glitch) so the player had to kill it. Another wolf respawned shortly afterwards and the mission continued normally. I do not remember if that happened to me in that mission but from time to time such glitches can occur but generally they can be ignored.
A lot of side missions require death of animals and fishing (Catch the Admiral so a couple can use the reward money to leave the county; kill the marading bears etc)
Keep in mind this is Far Cry so you will get jumped by a LOT of hostile animals.
However, the animals do not seem to be as dangerous as in FC4, you can likely survive the attacks far easier
That's why I'm not going to buy New Dawn. I'm not a gamer and I don't have to play all the games, even though they are hits and gather many fans around. I do it casually and I only play in what I want and when I want. If I don't find hunting okay even in games, why would I play them? You have to admit that there is no point in it.
When dealing with Jacob, and Faith, you will be forced to deal with 'spirit' animals (hallucinations/drugged), only way i can see someone such as yourself playing with that in mind is through melee only self defense kills or mercy kills as though you're on a hiking trip irl.
Also, you can have Animal Followers help you deal with them. Boomer for example is good at scaring wolves away, and can kill them easily given the chance.
Personally, if you're okay with Animal death in general, you shouldn't have too many issues, and I mean killing for survival or self defense, not hunting.
--Just use the Far Cry Resistance mod to allow higher monetary rewards to compensate when taking stuff from the cult
--You should be able to survive most animal attacks
--Create bait from accidental kills or carcasses you find and use the bait to misdirect animals that may attack
--Try a smoke grenade? I never tired that to avoid animals
