the reason that area would get bombed is in Montana is where they have many of the nuclear missile sites , in the usa and that area .. many are possibly still there ..tho they would not list the exact sites on wiki i'm sure .. this should give you an idea ..why Montana would get nuked , as part of an effort to knock out any retaliatory strikes .. we have had a lot of nukes stored in that area of the USA for decades .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/341st_Missile_Wing_LGM-30_Minuteman_Missile_Launch_Sites
that's only a partial list of old sites ..i'm sure the US has more . that are not listed , that are still classified , and in use today in that region of the USA .
but yea he was just another wack job ...who saw the end coming , you should also check out some of the interviews Day Hay did leading up to this game .. where he said he lived in a time during the cold war growing up that yea ..it was scary at times , i recall him talking about that at E 3 2017 the year before the game came out .
Also a good read is what Drew Holmes the lead writer for FC 5 was going for as to the hidden story of FarCry 5 ..many missed this , and his points to Revelations in the bible .
but go read it and see if it helps you understand the writing points of the game a lil better

was far cry 5 a perfect game ?.. eh depends on how ya look at it i guess ?.. i liked it,
and glad i bought the game .
Most of the issues with the ending tend to include: saying a murderous cult was the good guys, player agency being violated in the main missions, lots of players not hearing the radio about world war 3 occuring, the tone of the game was inconsistent, political satire that could fall really flat, and a wonderful open world that really wasn't taken advantage of in the main plot.
My feelings are like those of Mass Effect 3: good game, bad ending.
Every aspect of the package and it's incorporated DLC material are quite unique and extremely re-playable and satisfying. It is well written and produced and has a superb set of acting and music built into it.
'Real life', has many such contradictions as a 'bad ending' if you have lived or studied it enough,
Many people do not endorse the fact that an NPC (actor assisted) can also be an in-game star despite the more than usual predictable (in the box) expectations of the player themselves.
Sure, you weren't a "good guy" in Farcry 5. Those missions you went on on a whole did more damage then good, but this isn't the first game where the main characters are bad guys. I don't have to be the good guy and I'm along for the ride and Farcry 5 was one hell of a ride. But what I like about this storyline is wondering what the world would be like without the events of Farcry5. In New Dawn the world is a changed place with new factions rising to power and to be honest I think the world could really use Peggies if they weren't all wiped out.
Good to read some plainly objective and straight forward opinion on the way the game story, interest and how it unwinds instead of the persistent trolling;... which could be paraphrased now into this continuous monologue of:
'I don't like the story ending unless a bunch of posters agree with me on this repeated topic an make me feel better for the money I wish I hadn't spent!'
....which we are all getting sick of.....
It's a game.... a well made game which has made millions of cash (to provide more well made games which you will want) and millions of friendly players worldwide, so just play it and enjoy it and leave off the trolling; (post your own review instead, so we can see how long you have in-game) or choose the simple endings (there are two other softies to get you out into the sunset) or play something else which endorses your personal purity and bruised endorphins or... failing that you will definitely need a far darker but necessary enlightening.....of...... 'Atonement!'
Oh the Bliss!.......
