because in all games the character suffers in lands unknown to him.

So he suffers and cries so far away from his home.

So "far cry"

"Far cry" is an old expression meaning complete opposite from something else. It's a Far Cry from a good thing. Meaning it sucks hard. Or, she's a far cry from a beauty queen. She's not pretty.

The series was given this title because the games are usually about the player being in a harsh, sometimes lawless place, to add.

In addition to the above, the original Far Cry was made as a demo for the first generation Crytek engine, CryEngine. Ubisoft bought the rights and developed the full game, Far Cry. Ubisoft modified the CryEngine at some point into the Dunia engine.

Crytek also made Crysis.

*I just googled Crytek and found that Far Cry was originally titled, X-isle.
