However, in Far Cry 5 it just means the characters are talking at you the whole time. Couple this with the fact that that there's no player agency, and you feel like more of a camera man than a participant.
as for fallout 4, it wasn't so much about the voiced player, but the limitations they imposed on the game's dialog and story to support that design choice. I generally try to mute player voice lines whenever possible and turn subs on.
People are NEVER happy with what they get, after all.
Probably because the dialogue system likely mandated by the voice acting removed any meaningful nunance in dialogue choices. You get 4 choices and two of those were always "Yes" and "Yes, but sarcastically".
Had there been a couple thousand more lines of dialogue to allow for actual roleplaying, it would probably have been better received. Or they could just have saved the expense and just gone with text. Worked just fine in the past.
No, they don't. If you need to lie to make a point, your point is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ one.
What people are *actually* complaining about, is the fact that it's a roleplaying game that doesn't allow any actual roleplaying because of the inherent limitations of a voiced protagonist. FarCry is NOT a roleplaying game, however.
any first person view game for me with a voiced protagonist is less immersive. the viewpoint implies I am the player character, not that I am along with him for the ride. the best usages of this is where the camera switches to third person for dialog/uses text systems, and the worst is during gameplay the player provides his own lines unprompted entirely (without any key press or interaction with world.) like reminding what the objective is by talking outloud to self.
I rather enjoy creating my own dialog.
