"free" weekend nonsense
I'm not even mad. I'm not even disappointed. I'm just baffled.

In case you didn't know: yes, they've actually advertised free weekend, only to give you "purchase" button after you've already downloaded 50gb+. No, really, it just sends you to store page. Wow. Just wow.

I'm actually not sure, if this can be even called scam. I'd expect something like this from some really shady indie dev, not an actual company (even questionable one). It actually reminds me about the one, that called itself "Mostly Positive", just to confuse people about actual review average. Anybody care to speculate, what really happened here? Could it be just technical glitch (maybe on Valve's part after all...?). I cannot imagine anybody doing this intentionally, what would the endgame even be, did they expect me to panic and just click "buy" instead of "play", because both buttons are green? Am I missing something here?

I had to go into the uplay store and redeem the free weekend there and reinstall it.

maybe try reading some other pages

none of these LEGIT NEWS sites in fact UBISOFTS own site , mention it would be free on steam
https://www.ubisoft.com/en-gb/help/far-cry-5/gameplay/article/information-about-the-far-cry-5-free-weekend-august-2021/000098034

https://www.pcgamer.com/far-cry-5-free-weekend/

On Ubisoft Connect, the free trial period starts on August 5, 6 am PDT / 2 pm BST, while on Epic Games Store and Stadia, things kick off slightly later at 10 am PDT / 6 pm BST. If you afterwards decide that the game is for you, you can get it at 80% off on both storefronts.

https://www.pcgamesn.com/far-cry-5/free-weekend-promotional-discount
Ubisoft Connect or the Epic Games Store on PC. The free weekend is also available on consoles and Stadia.

https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/you-can-play-far-cry-5-for-free-this-weekend-starting-tomorrow-3010684 < this site says same as all the others and does not mention STEAM AT ALL

https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/you-can-play-far-cry-5-for-free-this-weekend-starting-tomorrow-3010684

The Far Cry 5 free trial is available on all platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Stadia, and PC (via Epic Games Store or Ubisoft Connect). This is also available to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners, although the game itself will be running based on backward-compatibility.

https://www.gamingnexus.com/News/48161/Its-a-Far-Cry-5-free-weekend!/
PC via Ubisoft Store: August 5 at 6 a.m. PDT
PC via Epic Games Store: August 5 at 10 a.m. PDT
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4: August 5 at 12:01 a.m. PDT
Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One: August 5 at 12:01 a.m. PDT
Stadia: August 5 at 10 a.m. PDT < this site does mention that the game will be on sale .. not free on steam

i think steam may have goofed, and set the store page for the free weekend , and due to steams added DRM layer , no it is not available on steam (only sold at a discount)

Steam is the only store that changes the install and yes even save file location too for the game , due to its DRM layer , so that may be why it will not function correctly

with the steam version of the game, it saves your game to

(again it says Drive C below ....as thats the drive i always install Uplay to .. your drive letter may vary depending on what drive you used to install Uplay to )

C:\ Program files X86 \ Ubisoft \ Ubisoft game launcher \savegames \ *ubi ID * \ 4311

the Uplay only version they go in
C:\ Program files X86 \ Ubisoft \ Ubisoft game launcher \savegames \ ubi ID* \ 1803

SO ,if you wanna play it free for the weekend on your PC , DOWNLOAD it on epic games or direct on UBI connect

Ok, so you are saying it's exclusively Steam's own doing? Not sure if I can 100% agree with that. I mean linked articles definitely shed some lights on it and show no intention of free weekend on Steam, but it still seems strange to me, that Ubisoft didn't react earlier.

First of all, free weekend was advertised on the Steam's front page. Second of all, and more importantly, I was able to download the game, for which I didn't pay (which definitely shouldn't have happened). If both of those things are indeed Steam's fault, and don't have anything to do with Ubisoft, then it would mean, that Valve can decide the price or freebies without consulting actual developer/publisher which sounds insane (maybe it should even end up in court). I mean, let's say that I'm developing app for Android and sell it for 5$, can Google decide (for some random reason), that it's suddenly free for X period of time without as much as informing me about it beforehand? It doesn't seem right, or even legal to me.

The longer I think about it, I'm starting to believe that there was supposed to be free weekend at some point, because again, I don't believe Valve, or any other store would do something like this. I guess there had to be miscommunication, and/or some exclusivity deal that came up last minute, which ultimately blocked the free weekend. Perhaps somebody in either Ubisoft or Valve forgot to pass the memo about the cancellation.

Still, the whole situation is just laughable. Average user (I guess myself included) doesn't always follow industry news, he/she just comes to the store, sees "free weekend", clicks download, and then expects to, you know, have a free weekend afterwards. Somebody definitely screwed up here.

Free weekend on Ubi and Epic stores only.

Better discounts on Ubi and Steam.
-=SOF=-WID99 Aug 7, 2021 @ 10:06am
and again if you wish to try the game for free you can .. simply DL it from UBI connect this weekend
steam or some one yes screwed up (could have been some one that worked at ubi too ) .. but i do think again the reason it did not work is yes STEAM CHANGES THE INSTALL FILE PATHS as well as SAVE File locations for the game

and again on many other pages there is no mention of the game being offered free on steam .. so yes some one SCREWED UP when they posted it would be on steams front end and store it looks like .

Yeah, I know that I can download the game from Epic or Uplay, but with my internet connection, that's not happening ;) Still, I guess I'm lucky that at least I don't have metered/limited download, I would be really pissed if that was the case.

If you already downloaded it on Steam and it's not working, here's how I managed to play it on Ubisoft Connect without having to download everything again:

1) Cut the folder of the game (FarCry5) from /steam/steamapps/common and paste it on your Uplay games folder;
2) Rename the folder from "FarCry5" to "Far Cry 5";
3) On the Steam page, go to Account Details > View Licences, remove the license of the game you acquired on Steam;
4) On the Ubisoft Connect app, on the "news" page, locate the announcement of the free weekend trial of Far Cry 5, click on it and you will acquire a license for the game on the Ubisoft Connect;
5) On the Ubisoft Connect, go to Games, click on Far Cry 5 and then on "Download", it will as for you to select what you want to install (just the game or the HD graphics pack), then it will ask you to select the folder you want to download, put the same folder were you previously paste the game on step 1;
6) It will verify the files and since you have already downloaded it, after some minutes it will be ready to play

try that , rather then DL the game again
