Maybe it's time to swap out the GPU.
Ps, if the GPU crashes on high then it is a crash pointing to the GPU.
Mine acted similarly in the beginning until I did a deep registry scan and a restart.
My game runs fine with a 6 year old gfx card. Unless your gpu is dying or you're pushing it past its abilities with OCing or settings, it's unlikely the culprit.
Dialing back memory OC is something I haven't tried yet though. I remember setting it awhile back and haven't fiddled with it since, probably around then end of 2017, beginning of 2018.. when I started playing AC Origins.
When the game crashed by being provoked it was always random, never at the same point each and every time. Usually at some point of stress during a fire fight or flying, when the data streams are going to be highest for the card to cope with. Also I just can't understand this force filed issue stopping me from retrieving the last Vietnam lighter from the cabin in the woods.
These crashes are something I've never seen in over 20 years of gaming and Ubisoft can't understand them either. So far I've tried everything they've suggested, including a full uninstall and re-install. Something has got into the system somewhere and just can't find it. Maybe it's buried in one of the save game profiles.
Nevertheless, the card does need to be replaced as the latest drivers are 2015 and the card was installed in 2012, so well out of date now. Will probably go for the latest RX version with 8GB RAM.
Yes I did pull up the crash log and submitted that to Ubisoft with all the other system data they asked for. curiously, it did not register any of the crashes at all, which surprised Ubisoft. This is despite the fact that I had provoked many of the crashes after the first buy/sell screen failure just to see if it was working again during the continuing progress through the game.
When I provoked the crashes in the beginning to explore the GPU sensitivity, windows recorded them all as GPU crashes (random) and flagged them up immediately in the usual way. So, whatever has gone on to cause this anomaly it's not registering!!
With the extra unlocked challenges it's still working fine with the same settings, but still scavenging ammo. Fortunately, up to the 60% point (screen crash starts) I didn't need to retrieve all the prepper stashes. So there are still quite a few dotted about the map that I can still get ammo from as well as looting bodies, so it's not impeding progress.
Finally, just as a general comment (subjective I know) I personally found the the buy/sell/loot/craft screen on FC5 was a step backwards from FC4 and I say that having played them back to back.
I found the screen on FC4 much more user friendly and flexible by comparison. However, that may not be the case for others.
Regards and thanks to everyone for the comments

I don't think the pagefile change is causing the crashes but who knows. I also just beat the Faith region so it might be related to game progression.
I thought FC 5 was boring by comparison and the challenge of taking out the heavily defended fortresses in FC 4 was more interesting. Also, the variations from the challenges set by Yogi and Reggie, plus the Shangri la and escort missions was more interesting in FC 4.
I found that taking out the outposts in FC5 was less hard than in FC4, where you had to be more stealthy not to be detected. Also the taking over of the bell towers in FC4 was a nice distraction from time to time. Similar to the radio towers in FC3.
As mentioned before, I think the buy/sell/loot/craft screen, which failed at the 60% progress point on my copy, was not as user friendly or as good in FC5 - a step backwards from my point of view.
I must confess, the inclusion of "fishing trips" to me was pointless. Didn't do any of those.
Despite the failure of the buy/sell screen, meaning that from 60% point I couldn't buy/upgrade new weapons, I already had my favourite weapon in both games, the 50 cal sniper rifle. In FC4 it's a one shot take down from any distance, even with the heavily armoured machine gunners.
In FC5 they seem to have toughened those guys up a bit and I found it needed 2 head shots to take them down, or 3 quick body shots. Still, no problem.
Personally, I don't think FC5 was as good and I think I'm going to pass on FC6, if there is such a thing, unless there are rave reviews.
I like FC3/4 where you had the option for .50 1 shot kills on the heavies but FC5 doesn't seem to let you one shot the armor in the head/neck.
Ps, at the beginning of FC5 nothing seemed to pierce the flame thrower tanks.
I picked up a .50 cal during the statue mission but before that nothing popped those tanks in one shot for me any way.
I think in FC5 my other beef was the crap way the controls worked when flying the planes. They're bloody awful. You need about 20 fingers and 3 hands, but John still shoots you down because he's some sort of WW2 fighter ace with a Mustang or Spitfire and you just can't match his rate of turn or agility. Helicopter gunship is best. Later, I shot down one of their aces in no time with that. It turns on its axis faster than a plane can.
In the end I left John flying around looking for me and went off to slaughter Jacob and Faith, By the time that was over, John had obviously got a bit bored waiting, had landed his plane close to his bunker and was standing outside smoking a ♥♥♥ or something. So, just put 3 long range shots from the 50 cal into him and took his key - simple.
Not sure why they can't make the planes react the same way as the helicopters. That way you have 6 functions all on the mouse (a-b and x-y axis) and therefore one hand which controls all movement, plus forward motion and fire on left and right mouse. That leaves your other hand to deal with the rest - just a thought!
