Guests do keep "player progression" -- e.g. money, inventory, progress towards challenges.
Also to note, when playing as a guest, make sure to press Esc and do a manual save or all of your perk's/cash/items bought during the session will be lost.
Gameplay is smooth, exciting and I love me some payment through Pepper Stash's for my services rendered.
how do you communicate?
There's voice chat. Default should be 'B' (broadcast?) if using K+M. Think there's also an option to leave the mic always-on and triggered by sound.
If you want to send text chat, you can do that via the UPlay overlay (Shift + F2 might be default), but given that this is a real-time game and you can be downed pretty quickly while you're typing a message, I would highly encourage using headsets and voice chat instead.
Ah. This bit is worth highlighting. Loot appears to basically be duplicated and independent for each player -- e.g. host and guest can each grab the same loot, whether it's looting the same body or grabbing perk magazines. So e.g. there shouldn't be any need to argue about who gets to pick up a given item.
FWIW, the guest also gets some perk points if the host completes a mission that intrinsically grants perk points (like defeating a boss).
