Far Cry 5 is Terrifying!
So, this is going to be a weird discussion, but it's one that I personally want to throw out there. Far Cry 5 is... terrifying.

Minor spoilers below!!!!!!

I'll admit, I was skeptical when the trailers were released because once again Christianity was posed as this supreme evil hellbent on wiping everyone out. (this discussion isn't about if this religion or that religion is good or evil) But the more I played the more I enjoyed the game and the story. I've still not beaten it but I noticed a creeping realization sliding over my shoulders... I was unnerved. Literally, legitimately frightened. I was born and raised in the southern regions of the United States, I grew up in a very Baptist family. I have my own demons with Christianity and being gay in rural Kentucky doesn't help, even as a child I found churches and choirs singing in unison to be terrifying because everyone was smiling and laughing but me, even as a small kid I felt so distanced from everyone, I felt like an outsider. I tried (and still do) to see the light that people gain from going to church, because I personally believe in a power, but that's not the point here.

There have been PLENTY of games with religious cults, if there's a game with a cult there's a chance I've played it... but Far Cry 5 managed to do what none of the others have ever done: Scare me.

I know how silly that sounds, a FAR CRY game being scary, but Far Cry 5 truly stresses me out, especially during cutscenes of the cultists all singing and praising God together. I blinked and then it clicked for me, I felt like an outsider all through my childhood and the main character is an outsider to Hope County.

I'm not unnerved by guts and gore, torture or murder sprees... but the audio atmosphere of Far Cry 5 is golden. I pass by those dead bodies hanging from trees and don't even bat an eye in their direction, but the minute the music starts the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I've not got far enough into the game to know too much, but I have had a few run-ins with "Faith Seed" (For those of you who already know her) and by god if she doesn't freak me the hell out. The dream sequences are cheezy and beautiful all at the same time. The actress totally nailed that "Indoctrination" voice. I remember actually thinking "Wow, these people don't sound so bad." as she explained things to me. (Don't worry, I quickly sobered up.)

Again, this was a completely pointless post, but I was just curious if there was anyone else out there that was surprisingly unnerved by the game like I was, or if I'm just a big baby haha

It is what it is, I don't have your experiences so I can't honestly say that I either feel the same or feel the need to point and laugh at you for feeling that way bar some gentle ribbing...

I agree. They did a great job introducing the villain. Was pretty intense.
