Can't pet boomer?

So I came upon boomer, the side quest says to pet him but I have no idea how. No icon "Press ___" is coming up. Any suggestions?

I had the same issue, I just walked around the area and did other things and a few minutes later he calmed down and was siting and I was able to pet him.

I got this too. First try, I killed all the cultists before releasing him. When I couldn't figure out how to pet him, I exited the game figuring it was a bug. Second try, there were more cultists and while I was attacking them the dog got out and they knocked him down. After the cultists were dead I had the option to pet him.

Like someone else mentioned, kill the dog, revive and you can pet it.

You need to destroy the truck with the speakers on it, then the dog leaves the cage and you can pet it.

Anything preventing giving Boomer a pet is a travesty.

He's such a good boy, do whatever it takes to give him many pets.
