Ambient occlusion is just a fake way to create contact shadows and currently the only feasible way to do them. No-one has powerful enough machine to run real light calculations on real time. There are many different techniques to create AO and sure a hell this one has at least one of them implemented too.
The missing settings in the options menu only tells that they are not yet implemented in the menu.
Also, missing shaders does not tell anything about graphical inferiority. The assets can be made so good, that no post fx are needed for color correction or such. However, it's unlikely for this game to make so large leap in graphics that no post fxs are needed.
They're not implemented as terribly as they were in 3 for example,
but they're there and easily visible if you know what you're looking for.
I came to this page looking for a way to turn them off.
